From Monday 23 November 2026, Heidelberg's Old Town turns into one long Advent stroll. Around 140 huts and stalls spread across six squares between Bismarckplatz and Karlsplatz, linked by the Hauptstraße, the Old Town's car-free spine. The castle ruins rise above it all, and on Karlsplatz you can skate with a view of the illuminated castle. The market runs until 22 December, the ice rink until 10 January 2027. Here are all the dates, opening hours and our tips for Heidelberg in Advent.

The six squares are strung like beads along the Hauptstraße. From Bismarckplatz in the west to Karlsplatz below the castle it's just under two kilometres. Start at Bismarckplatz and work your way east square by square, and you'll end the evening at the ice rink with the best view of the castle. Allow two to three hours for the whole route with breaks.

The six squares
Bismarckplatz
The transport hub on the edge of the Old Town is where it all begins. Most visitors step off the tram or bus here, and the first stalls greet you straight away – a good spot for a first mulled wine before turning into the Hauptstraße.
Anatomiegarten
Tucked away just off the Hauptstraße, the small Anatomiegarten is usually quieter than the big squares, and it's easier to find a standing table.
Universitätsplatz
In front of the Old and New University buildings there are stalls with crafts and food. If you're curious about Germany's oldest university, make a detour to the Student Prison, where students once served their detention.
Marktplatz
The heart of the market lies between the town hall and the Church of the Holy Spirit, which still has little shops wedged between its buttresses. On the square stands Father Christmas's house, a favourite meeting point for families. The Hercules Fountain in the middle makes a handy landmark if you lose each other.
Kornmarkt with the winter forest
The Kornmarkt hosts the Heidelberger Winterwäldchen, a small forest of illuminated fir trees. From here you look straight up at the castle, and the funicular station is just a few steps away. In the evening the Kornmarkt may be the most atmospheric spot of the whole market.
Karlsplatz with the ice rink
Karlsplatz is home to the ice landscape. You skate to Christmas music against the backdrop of the castle ruins. The rink opens on 23 November and stays until 10 January 2027 – so it's still open between Christmas and New Year, after the market has gone. On opening day it runs from 10am to 10pm, with tickets sold at the box office. The organiser hasn't published 2026 prices yet.
What to eat and drink
- Mulled wine in the Heidelberg mug: you can buy the mug to keep, on its own or in a gift set.
- Heidelberger Studentenkuss: the city's signature chocolate, sold in Old Town confectioners – a classic souvenir.
- Palatinate cooking: the inns around Marktplatz and Kornmarkt serve hearty regional dishes when you need to warm up.
- Children's punch for anyone skipping the alcohol.
2026 prices for mulled wine and the mug deposit aren't known yet.

Hear Heidelberg's stories on the way
Our audio walk "Heidelberg: Ruins, Romance and a Giant Barrel" starts on Universitätsplatz, right in the middle of the Christmas market. Its 14 stops over 1.9 kilometres take you from the Student Prison past the Haus zum Ritter and the Church of the Holy Spirit to the Bridge Monkey, across the Old Bridge and up by funicular to the castle and the Great Tun. It takes about 90 minutes, in English or German, and the first two stops are free in your browser. Tip: start in the early afternoon so you reach the castle before dark.
An Advent day in Heidelberg: our suggestion
- 10am – Castle: take the funicular from Kornmarkt up to Heidelberg Castle while it's still quiet. The castle ticket includes the funicular.
- 12:30pm – Kornmarkt and Karlsplatz: back down to the Old Town to see the winter forest and the ice rink.
- 1:30pm – Marktplatz: lunch between the town hall and the Church of the Holy Spirit.
- 3pm – Old Bridge: walk across the Old Bridge and climb to the Philosophers' Walk for the view of the Old Town and castle in the last light.
- 5pm – Hauptstraße: follow the Hauptstraße to Universitätsplatz, Anatomiegarten and Bismarckplatz.
- Evening – ice rink: if you still have energy, head back to Karlsplatz and skate until 10pm below the floodlit castle.
Away from the stalls
If the Hauptstraße gets too busy, slip into the side streets between it and the Neckar. Around Untere Straße and Steingasse it's quieter, and from the riverside promenade you can see the Old Bridge and its gate towers in the evening light. For some exercise, climb the Snake Path up to the Philosophers' Walk: it takes about 20 minutes, and at the top you get the classic postcard view of the Old Town, bridge and castle. In December it's almost deserted there in the late afternoon. If it rains, the Church of the Holy Spirit or the University Library make a good break from the bustle. On clear days the funicular continues beyond the castle up to the Königstuhl, with a wide view over the Rhine plain.
Practical tips
When to go
- Weekday mornings and early afternoons: the Hauptstraße is still easy to walk.
- Evenings and weekends: the organiser warns that the market gets especially busy then.
- Saturday: the only day it stays open until 10pm.
- After 22 December: the market is over, but the ice rink is open until 10 January.
Getting there and parking
Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof is served by ICE trains and the S-Bahn from Mannheim, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. From the station, take a tram or bus to Bismarckplatz and continue on foot. Car parks in the Old Town and centre fill up quickly at weekends and in the evening; the organiser points to parking at Bismarckplatz, the main station and the Neuer Messplatz, and the city's parking guidance system shows free spaces in real time.
With children
Father Christmas's house on Marktplatz and the ice rink on Karlsplatz are the children's highlights, and the rink is explicitly family-friendly. With a pushchair, the Hauptstraße is fine during the day but tight in the evening.
Accessibility
The Hauptstraße is flat; some squares at either end are cobbled. The funicular goes up to the castle, but the castle courtyard is uneven. Weekday mornings are the most comfortable with a wheelchair.
Dogs
The organiser doesn't mention a dog ban. Keep your dog on a short lead and avoid the crowded evenings.
Where to stay
There are hotels in the Old Town, around Bismarckplatz and near the station. Heidelberg Marketing offers a Christmas market package, and the tourist information team can advise. Mannheim, a short S-Bahn ride away, is often cheaper.
Gift idea: the castle, the Old Bridge and the Neckar as a keepsake – design a personal poster.
Nearby: our tips
- Heidelberg Castle: the famous ruin with the Great Tun.
- Old Bridge: with its gate towers and the Bridge Monkey, a few steps from Marktplatz.
- Philosophers' Walk: the viewpoint path on the other bank of the Neckar.
- Königstuhl: ride the funicular beyond the castle up the city's hill.
- Schwetzingen Palace: palace gardens for a quiet winter day, about 20 minutes away.
