About this place

Schwetzingen Palace and its gardens, the former summer residence of the Electors Palatine, rank among the finest historic gardens in Europe. Set between Heidelberg and Mannheim in Baden-Württemberg, the roughly 70-hectare (170-acre) park blends a formal Baroque garden with a circular parterre and a romantic English landscape garden full of temples, fake ruins and a rose-colored garden mosque. It is an easy and rewarding day trip from Heidelberg or Frankfurt.

Why Schwetzingen is special

The palace took its present Baroque shape from 1697, but its golden age came under Elector Carl Theodor, who spent his summers here with his court. His architect and garden director, Nicolas de Pigage, designed many of the garden buildings. The court theater opened in 1753; Voltaire stayed here, and a seven-year-old Mozart performed at a court concert in 1763. When Carl Theodor moved his court to Munich in 1778, Schwetzingen fell quiet, which helped preserve its 18th-century character.

Top things to see in the gardens

  • The circular parterre: The round Baroque garden behind the palace, centered on the Arion Fountain, is unlike anything else in Germany.
  • The Mosque: Built from 1778, this pink pavilion with two minarets is considered the first and largest garden mosque of its kind in a German park. It was a romantic folly, never a place of worship.
  • Temple of Apollo: A round temple perched above a grotto and an open-air theater.
  • Bath House: Carl Theodor's elegant private retreat in the middle of the garden.
  • Temple of Mercury and Roman Water Fort: Ruins built on purpose to look ancient.
  • Chinese Bridge and Great Pond: Especially photogenic in fall.

The garden contains more than 60 statues, busts and fountains from the 18th century. The palace interior can only be seen on a guided tour; the 60-minute tour is included in the palace-and-garden ticket. Ask at the ticket office about English-language options.

How to get to Schwetzingen

Schwetzingen is about 10 miles west of Heidelberg and roughly an hour by car or train from Frankfurt Airport. Schwetzingen train station is a 10-minute walk from the palace. From Mannheim, take bus 710; from Heidelberg, take tram 22 and change to bus 713, or ride bus 717 directly. Regional trains and buses are covered by the Deutschlandticket. Drivers can use the paid parking lot at Alter Messplatz, about 300 meters from the entrance.

Practical tips

  • Dogs are welcome in the gardens on a fixed leash but not inside the palace.
  • Tripods, drones, barbecues and open fires are banned on the grounds.
  • Bike racks and e-bike charging stations are available in the main courtyard.
  • Allow at least two to three hours; add an hour for the palace tour.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, if you love gardens, architecture or 18th-century court life. Combine it with Heidelberg Castle or Mannheim Baroque Palace for a full day in the region.
