About this place

Blühendes Barock ("Baroque in Bloom") in Ludwigsburg is one of Germany's best-known garden shows, covering about 30 hectares (74 acres) around Ludwigsburg Residential Palace. Formal Baroque flower beds, English-style landscape gardens, a fairy-tale garden for children, and a spectacular autumn pumpkin festival make it a favorite day out. Just 15 minutes by suburban train from Stuttgart, it pairs perfectly with a tour of one of the largest Baroque palaces in Germany.

From ducal gardens to a permanent garden show

The gardens grew up with the palace: Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg began laying them out in 1704. Their current form largely dates from garden director Albert Schöchle, who redesigned them from 1953. In 1954, a jubilee garden show opened under the name Blühendes Barock, and its success turned it into a permanent attraction. The Fairy-Tale Garden followed in 1959, inspired by the fairy-tale forest at the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands.

Things to do at Blühendes Barock

  • South Garden: the formal parterre in front of the palace facade, with fountains and geometric flower beds.
  • North Garden: terraces, a fountain basin, and aviaries.
  • Landscape gardens: English-style grounds with a lake, historic playground rides, and the Emichsburg, a mock castle ruin.
  • Fairy-Tale Garden: more than 40 scenes from classic stories, including a stone dragon that "eats" paper and says thank you.
  • Seasonal events: As of October 2026, the pumpkin festival, billed by the operator as the world's largest, runs until November 1, 2026, and the illuminated "Leuchtende Traumpfade" light trail takes over the park after dark from October 23 to December 6, 2026 (separate ticket).

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, the park is open daily 7:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. from March 20 to December 6, 2026. The Fairy-Tale Garden keeps shorter hours, closing at 4:30 p.m. in late October and at 4 p.m. from November. Day tickets cost €14–16 for adults at the gate depending on the day, or from €12 online, and €6–7 for children aged 4 to 14. Online tickets include public transport within the Stuttgart VVS network, a great perk for visitors without a car. Allow three to five hours.

How to get to Ludwigsburg

Ludwigsburg lies just north of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg. Take the S4 or S5 suburban train from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof to Ludwigsburg, then walk through the town center or catch a bus (lines 422, 425, 426, 431, or 433) to the main entrance on Schorndorfer Strasse. Stuttgart Airport is the closest international airport. Parking near the gardens is limited, especially on weekends. Prices are in euros (EUR).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially from spring through autumn and with kids. Dogs on short leashes are welcome in most areas, many paths are paved or graveled, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge against a deposit. Combine your visit with a guided tour of the Residential Palace, where your garden ticket gives you a discount.

Nearby

  • Ludwigsburg Residential Palace: a vast Baroque palace at the heart of the gardens.
  • Favorite Palace: a Baroque hunting lodge in a park opposite the main palace.
  • Monrepos Lake Palace: a lakeside pleasure palace on the northern edge of town.
