The tripto catalogue lists 29 gardens and parks – flower islands, Baroque gardens, landscape parks and large city parks. All are family-friendly, and many are free.
Mainau Island in Lake Constance near Konstanz is a flower island with a Baroque palace, an arboretum, a dahlia garden and a butterfly house; children up to 12 go free. Munich's English Garden covers 376 hectares with the Monopteros, the Chinese Tower and the Eisbach wave – open around the clock and free. In Hannover's Herrenhausen Gardens, the Great Fountain shoots 80 metres high, next to the Grotto by Niki de Saint Phalle. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Hercules monument, cascades and free water features. In Hamburg, Planten un Blomen has a Japanese garden and free water-light concerts in summer, and Berlin's Tempelhofer Feld, the former airfield, offers more than 300 hectares of open space for skating and kite flying.
Most gardens and parks in the catalogue are in Berlin and Bavaria (six each), followed by Saxony. Munich has four.
In practice: allow two to four hours for a large park and half a day for Mainau. About half of the gardens are free; Mainau (€29.50 in summer, cheaper online) and the Herrenhausen Gardens (€10) charge. April to October is the most beautiful time, and the Bergpark water features only run in season.
