Things to Do in Heidelberg: Best Sights, Map & 1–2 Day Itinerary

Heidelberg sits where the Neckar River leaves the Odenwald hills for the Rhine plain. Above its red sandstone old town stands the ruined castle where the Electors Palatine lived for almost three centuries. French troops wrecked it in 1689 and 1693, lightning struck twice in 1764, and the ruin went on to become the great symbol of German Romanticism. Across the river, the Philosophers' Walk runs along the slope of the Heiligenberg with the classic view of town, castle and Old Bridge.

On this page you will find our picks for a first visit, a one-day and a two-day itinerary, day trips in the region, how to get there and the full list of Heidelberg sights in the tripto.de catalog. Opening hours and prices are on each attraction page – please check with the venue before you go.

Getting there

By air: The nearest major airport is Frankfurt (FRA), a little over 80 km away. From the airport's long-distance train station it takes about an hour to Heidelberg depending on the connection, and the fastest trains run direct.

By train: Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof is served by long-distance trains as well as regional and S-Bahn lines. The intercity bus station is right next to it.

Getting around: Buses and trams are run by rnv, with Bismarckplatz as the main hub. For the castle, take bus 20 or 36 to Rathaus/Bergbahn and continue by funicular. The Deutschlandticket (63 euros a month in 2026) covers buses and trams but not the funicular. There is no parking at the castle itself, and old-town streets are narrow, so use the garages on the edge of the center.

Day trips: Bus 717 (or tram 22 with a change to bus 713) goes to Schwetzingen. Speyer is on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn network, and bus 561 runs from Speyer station to the cathedral.

When to go

April to October is the best time: the tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit is open only in these months, and the funicular runs on its summer schedule until November 1, 2026. In summer the castle courtyard hosts the Heidelberg Castle Festival, and the castle illumination takes place every year. The Enjoy Jazz festival runs from early October to mid-November.

In winter the funicular switches to its winter schedule from November 2, 2026, with the last ride down from Königstuhl at 5:28 pm. During Advent the Christmas market spreads across several old-town squares, including the Marktplatz, University Square and Kornmarkt, with an ice rink on Karlsplatz below the castle.

Plan ahead: From October 4, 2027 to April 7, 2028 both funicular sections will be shut for bridge repairs, with a replacement bus between Kornmarkt and Molkenkur.
