„The bridge that vanished and came back – and the Romantics' view.”

The Old Bridge in Heidelberg (Alte Brücke) is the red sandstone bridge that has defined the city's skyline since the 1780s. It spans the Neckar River between the Old Town and the Neuenheim district, and from its arches you get the classic postcard view: the castle ruins above the rooftops, the Church of the Holy Spirit, and wooded hills on both sides. It's free, open around the clock, and one of the top things to do in Heidelberg.
Heidelberg lies in Baden-Württemberg, roughly 90 km south of Frankfurt. From Frankfurt Airport, the drive takes about an hour; by train, you usually change in Mannheim, from where the S-Bahn to Heidelberg takes around 15 minutes. If you have a Deutschlandticket, it covers regional trains and local buses, though not long-distance ICE services.
From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, local buses 33 and 35 stop at "Alte Brücke" at the Old Town end of the bridge, and bus 34 stops at "Alte Brücke Nord" on the Neuenheim side. Alternatively, walk from Bismarckplatz along the Hauptstraße, the Old Town's long pedestrian street, in roughly 20 minutes. Drivers should use the parking garages on the edge of the Old Town rather than the narrow lanes near the river.
Officially named the Karl Theodor Bridge, after the Elector Palatine who commissioned it, the current structure was built from 1786 to 1788 to designs by Mathias Mayer. It replaced a long line of wooden predecessors: a crossing here is documented as early as 1284, and ice floes, floods and war destroyed bridge after bridge. The last wooden one was swept away by an ice flood in February 1784, which finally convinced the elector to build in stone.
The bridge survived the following 150 years largely intact, until retreating German troops blew up two of its piers on March 29, 1945. Residents raised money for the rebuilding, and the bridge reopened in July 1947. It has been a symbol of Heidelberg's Romantic image ever since, painted and praised by artists and poets.
The bridge is about 200 m (656 ft) long and rests on nine arches. Look out for:
You can see the bridge in 20 to 30 minutes, but most visitors linger longer. Come early in the morning to avoid the crowds that fill the bridge on summer afternoons and weekends. For the best photos, cross to the north bank and climb the steep Schlangenweg path to the Philosophers' Walk, which looks straight down onto the bridge, the Old Town and the castle. After dark, the illuminated castle and bridge make for a memorable evening stroll.
There's no ticket and no opening hours; the bridge is a public pedestrian crossing (as of October 2026). If you'd like a guide, Heidelberg Marketing runs public walking tours of the Old Town; the tourist information office has the current schedule and languages.
Absolutely. The Old Bridge is not a stand-alone sight but the heart of any Heidelberg day trip from Frankfurt, Mannheim or Stuttgart. Combine it with the castle, the Old Town and the Philosophers' Walk for a full day.
