About this place

The Königstuhl in Heidelberg is the city's local mountain, rising 567.8 m (1,863 ft) directly behind Heidelberg Castle. A historic funicular climbs to the summit, where you'll find sweeping views over the Old Town, the Neckar Valley and the Rhine plain, plus forest trails, a falconry, a family amusement park and a working observatory. It pairs perfectly with a castle visit and is one of the most rewarding things to do in Heidelberg.

Getting there

Heidelberg is about an hour by car or train from Frankfurt Airport. Once in town, the classic way up is the Heidelberg funicular (Bergbahn). The lower line runs from Kornmarkt square in the Old Town via the castle station to Molkenkur, where you change to the upper line for the summit. The lower section opened in 1890 and the upper one in 1907; together they climb about 436 m. Note that the Deutschlandticket is not valid on the funicular.

Bus 39 also runs from Bismarckplatz to the summit via the observatory; the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy lists an hourly service with a ride of about 40 minutes. You can also drive up on a local road.

Tickets and timetable

As of October 2026, according to the operator:

  • Königstuhl ticket (upper line only): adults €7 one way, €10 round trip; reduced fares half price.
  • Panorama ticket (Kornmarkt to summit, including the castle courtyard, the Barrel Cellar and the German Pharmacy Museum): adults €17 round trip, family ticket €36.
  • The summer timetable runs until November 1, 2026, with the upper line every 20 minutes and the last descent at 7:48 pm. From November 2, the last descent from the summit is at 5:28 pm.

Plan ahead for 2027/28: both lines will be closed for bridge repairs from October 4, 2027, to April 7, 2028, with a replacement bus to Molkenkur.

What to do at the top

  • Enjoy the view: look out over Heidelberg and far across the Rhine plain.
  • Märchenparadies: a fairy-tale themed amusement park for young children, covering about 48,000 m².
  • Falconry Tinnunculus: see birds of prey up close at public flight demonstrations.
  • Hike: trails crisscross the city forest, and the long-distance European path E1 passes through.
  • Climb the Himmelsleiter: the "stairway to heaven" has more than 1,200 steps and gains about 270 m between Molkenkur and the summit.

The mountain also hosts the state observatory and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy; two TV and telecom towers from 1958 mark the summit on the skyline.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you have half a day in Heidelberg. The funicular ride is an experience in itself, and the Panorama ticket makes sense if you're visiting the castle anyway. Allow 2 to 3 hours, more with children. The wheelchair lift at Molkenkur station was recently out of service, so check with the operator before you go.

Nearby

  • Heidelberg Castle: at the funicular's castle station.
  • Molkenkur: the transfer station, with a restaurant and city views.
  • Old Bridge and Old Town: a short walk from Kornmarkt.
  • Philosophers' Walk: the classic viewpoint on the opposite bank of the Neckar.
