Things to Do in Hesse: Top 10 Sights & Travel Tips

For many travelers, Hesse is just Frankfurt Airport, but the state is worth more than a layover. Frankfurt mixes a skyscraper skyline with a rebuilt old town, a riverside museum district and traditional apple wine taverns. To the west, the vineyards of the Rheingau hold Eberbach Abbey and the Niederwald Monument above Rüdesheim. North of the city, the Taunus hills hide the reconstructed Roman fort of Saalburg. In the far north, Kassel's Hercules statue crowns Europe's largest hillside park, and in the east the Rhön rises to the Wasserkuppe, the state's highest point. Darmstadt's Mathildenhöhe, the Messel Pit fossil site and the Roman Limes are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

This page covers our top 10 sights in Hesse, a one-day plan for Frankfurt and a weekend that adds the Rheingau, plus tips on getting there and when to go. Below, you'll find every attraction in Hesse from the tripto.de catalog. Hours and prices are on each attraction's page; check them with the operator before you go.

Why visit

  • Frankfurt Airport has its own long-distance train station, and the S-Bahn gets you downtown in about 10 to 12 minutes, so even a long layover can include the old town.
  • The Städel is one of Germany's top art museums, and the Main Tower is the only skyscraper in Frankfurt with a public observation deck.
  • Kassel's Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is free to enter year-round, and its famous water features run from May to early October.
  • In the Rheingau, you can combine wine country, a medieval abbey and Rhine views in a single day.
  • Kids can see dinosaurs at the Senckenberg museum, explore a Roman fort at Saalburg and ride the summer toboggan run on the Wasserkuppe.

Getting there

By air: Frankfurt Airport has a regional station for S-Bahn and local trains and a separate long-distance station for ICE and IC trains. S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 reach Frankfurt Central Station in about 10 to 12 minutes.

By train: Frankfurt Central Station is one of Germany's main rail hubs. Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is on the ICE line to the north, and Limburg is on the Cologne–Frankfurt high-speed line. Rüdesheim is on the right-bank Rhine line with connections to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. The Deutschland-Ticket covers all regional trains.

By car: The main highways are the A3 (Cologne–Frankfurt–Würzburg), the A5 (Giessen–Frankfurt–Darmstadt) and the A7 through northern Hesse. In Frankfurt's old town, use a parking garage or take public transit.

When to go

May to early October is the best time for day trips. Kassel's water features run May 1 to October 3 on Wednesdays, Sundays and Hessian public holidays; the next season starts in May 2027. The Hercules is open April through October, and the Rüdesheim cable car runs March 21 to November 1 in 2026.

In December, the Christmas market on Frankfurt's Römerberg and the Rüdesheim Christmas market (November 19 to December 23, 2026) are the highlights, and the Rüdesheim cable car reopens for the market. On rainy days, the Städel and the Senckenberg museum are good bets.
