About this place

Point Alpha on the former border between Hesse and Thuringia is one of the best places in Germany to grasp what the Cold War looked like on the ground. A US Army observation post and the East German border fortifications face each other across a hilltop in the Rhön, only a few hundred meters apart. Today the site is a memorial and museum about Germany's division.

Why Point Alpha matters

Point Alpha was one of four US observation posts along the inner German border in Hesse, and it sat in the middle of the Fulda Gap. NATO planners feared Warsaw Pact armored divisions could push through this low corridor toward Frankfurt. From 1965 the US Army used the site, from 1972 manned by the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment "Blackhorse", until it withdrew in 1991. Watching the border day and night, US soldiers here were among the first who would have seen an attack.

The memorial was developed from 1995 and has been run by the Point Alpha Foundation since 2008. The Point Alpha Prize is awarded here for services to German and European unity; George H. W. Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev and Helmut Kohl were among the first recipients in 2005.

What to see

Start at the US Camp with its observation tower, barracks, military vehicles and an exhibition on American soldiers on the border. Then follow the patrol road along preserved and reconstructed East German fences to the House on the Border, which covers the border regime, forced resettlements and the Green Belt nature corridor. The Path of Hope is a 1.4 km sculpture trail with 14 stations on the former death strip. Plan two to four hours.

Tickets and opening hours

A day ticket is 8 EUR for adults and 22 EUR for families, with reduced tickets at 6 EUR (as of October 2026). From April to October the memorial is open daily 10 am to 6 pm; in November and March until 4:30 pm, and from December to February it is closed on Mondays. Guided tours, including in foreign languages, must be booked in advance; otherwise media stations explain the site.

How to get there

Point Alpha is in the Rhön hills northeast of Fulda, about 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Frankfurt. The nearest train station is Hünfeld, on the line between Fulda and Bad Hersfeld; from there buses 77 and 120 stop at "Point Alpha". With a car you can park at either entrance, the US Camp or the House on the Border. There is a snack bar, the Black Horse Inn, which takes cash only.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are interested in Cold War history or military history. Few places show both sides of the Iron Curtain so directly, and for American visitors the story of US troops on the border adds a personal angle. Combine it with baroque Fulda or a hike in the Rhön.
