About this place

The Fridericianum in Kassel is one of the first public museums in continental Europe and the historic home of documenta, the world-famous exhibition of contemporary art. Behind its columned Neoclassical facade on Friedrichsplatz, the building now operates as a Kunsthalle with changing shows by international artists. Whether or not you visit during a documenta year, it is one of the most important art venues in Germany.

From princely museum to documenta

Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse-Kassel commissioned the building from architect Simon Louis du Ry, and it was built between 1769 and 1779. Designed as a museum open to the public from the start, it was a pioneering idea in the age of private princely collections. Under Jérôme Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, it housed the parliament of the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1810 to 1813.

An air raid in September 1941 gutted the building and destroyed some 350,000 books from the library. After reconstruction, the Fridericianum became the main venue of the first documenta in 1955, and it has been at the center of every edition since. Since 1988, it has been a Kunsthalle for contemporary art without a permanent collection.

What to expect

Several exhibitions usually run at the same time. As of October 2026, the program includes shows on painter Mohammed Sami and sculptor Charles Ray, along with smaller interventions. Public tours are included in admission (check the event calendar for times and languages), and the café in the central rotunda keeps the same hours as the galleries.

documenta 16 is scheduled for June 12 to September 19, 2027, with Naomi Beckwith as artistic director. Expect crowds and special ticketing during that period.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, the Fridericianum is open Tuesday to Sunday and on holidays, 11 a.m.–6 p.m., and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays; it is closed on Mondays. Admission is €6 (reduced €4). Entry is free for visitors under 18 and for everyone on Wednesdays. Allow one to two hours. The building is accessible via a ramp and two elevators.

How to get to the Fridericianum

Kassel lies in northern Hesse, in the geographic center of Germany. ICE trains reach Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe in about an hour and a half from Frankfurt and around two hours from Hamburg. From there, take a tram downtown to the Friedrichsplatz stop, about 200 meters from the entrance. Drivers can use the Friedrichsplatz underground garage. Prices are in euros (EUR).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are interested in contemporary art or in documenta's history. Free Wednesdays make it an easy addition to a day exploring Kassel, and the building itself is a landmark of museum history.
