About this place

The Technoseum in Mannheim is Baden-Württemberg's state museum of technology and work, and one of Germany's major science and technology museums. Spread over six levels, it tells the story of industrialization and everyday technology through giant machines, working demonstrations and plenty of hands-on experiments. It is one of the best things to do in Mannheim with kids, and a perfect rainy-day stop in the Rhine-Neckar region.

About the Museum

Founded in 1985 by the state and the city of Mannheim, the museum opened on September 28, 1990, as the State Museum of Technology and Work and was renamed Technoseum in 2010. Its striking white, stepped building was designed by Berlin architect Ingeborg Kuhler. About 8,000 square meters (86,000 sq ft) of exhibition space are arranged on six levels, labeled A to F.

Highlights

  • A 1909 steam engine on level F, one of the museum's showpieces.
  • The "Eschenau" steam locomotive, a converted 1896 shunting engine from Württemberg.
  • A historic paper mill where you can make your own sheet of paper.
  • Hands-on physics stations, from a giant marble run to a self-supporting Leonardo bridge.
  • Live demonstrations of historic machines during the day; check the daily schedule on arrival.

Special Exhibitions 2026–27

"CRIME – The Technology of Crime" runs until June 27, 2027, exploring how technology shapes both crime and investigation, from police sketches and DNA analysis to hacking and deepfakes. From November 20, 2026, to July 25, 2027, Baden-Württemberg's major state exhibition "The Cosmos – How the Stars Explain the World" showcases 18th-century instruments from Mannheim's historic observatory, models of the James Webb Space Telescope and a large ceiling planetarium.

Note that the permanent exhibition is being renewed over the coming years while the museum stays open; parts of level A and the museum shop are currently closed.

Tickets and Opening Hours

As of October 2026, the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (Mondays only on public holidays). It is closed December 24, 25 and 31, January 1, and from January 11 to 22, 2027; from January 23, 2027, hours change to 9 a.m.–4 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekends. Admission is €12 for adults, €9 reduced and for children from age 6, and €24 for a family ticket. Arrive after 4 p.m. and you get 50% off.

How to Get There

Mannheim Hauptbahnhof is a major ICE hub, with fast trains from Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Cologne, making the museum an easy day trip. From the city, take tram line 6 or 9 to "Luisenpark/Technoseum" (the museum asks visitors to use only these lines during roadworks). Drivers can use the visitor parking at Friedensplatz.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially with children or on a gray day. Allow 3 to 4 hours, and combine your visit with a stroll through the large Luisenpark right next door. The building is accessible but not fully barrier-free, according to the museum.
