Heidelberg: Ruins, Romance and a Giant Barrel

„A wall through the middle of a church – and a library in 196 crates.”

About this place

The Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) in Heidelberg is the red sandstone Gothic church that anchors the Market Square in the heart of the Old Town. It was the burial church of the Electors Palatine, once housed the legendary Bibliotheca Palatina library, and for more than two centuries was split by a wall between Protestants and Catholics. Climbing its tower gives you one of the best views of Heidelberg Castle and the Neckar River.

A short history

Construction stretched over more than a century: the choir was begun in 1398, the nave completed in 1441 and the tower finished around 1515. The church's Baroque roof and spire date from after the Nine Years' War, when French troops set the building on fire in May 1693.

Three stories make this church stand out among German city churches:

  • Royal tombs: the choir once held 54 tombs of Palatine rulers and their families. Only the tomb slab of King Rupert (Ruprecht) and his wife Elisabeth survives.
  • A lost library: the galleries held the Bibliotheca Palatina, one of Europe's great Renaissance libraries. It was carried off to Rome as war booty in 1622, and only part of the manuscripts came back in 1816.
  • A divided church: from 1706 a partition wall separated a Protestant nave from a Catholic choir. It came down for good in 1936.

What to see

Outside, look for the tiny shops tucked between the buttresses, a medieval tradition that still survives with bookstalls and souvenir sellers. Inside, the tall hall church glows in warm red tones. Highlights are the royal tomb slab in the choir, post-war stained glass, and the large Steinmeyer organ with 61 stops. Earlier organs here were played by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Albert Schweitzer.

Climbing the tower

The tower entrance is in the north aisle. A narrow staircase of about 200 steps leads to a viewing platform 38 meters up, with a 360-degree panorama over rooftops, the castle, the Old Bridge and the river. It is not suitable for wheelchairs and can feel tight if you dislike enclosed stairs.

How to get there

Heidelberg is about 80 km south of Frankfurt Airport; trains via Mannheim take roughly an hour, and regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket. From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, take a bus toward the Old Town and get off at Rathaus/Bergbahn, or walk about 15 minutes along the pedestrianized Hauptstrasse from Bismarckplatz. Drivers should use one of the Old Town parking garages.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially as a stop on a day trip from Frankfurt or Stuttgart. Entry to the church is free, it takes 20 to 30 minutes, and the tower adds a viewpoint you would otherwise only get from the castle. Nearby, you can continue to the Old Bridge, ride the funicular up to Heidelberg Castle, or stroll the Hauptstrasse.

Christmas market 2026

In Advent, the market square in front of the Church of the Holy Spirit hosts a wooden Christmas town around the Hercules Fountain, with a large wooden barrel and a turning figure of Perkeo. Heidelberg's Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026, on Saturdays from 11 am to 10 pm and on other days from 11 am to 9 pm. The winter woodland and the ice rink stay open longer, until 1 and 6 January 2027. More in our guide Heidelberg Christmas market 2026.
