Heidelberg: Ruins, Romance and a Giant Barrel

„To the living spirit – and why these words were once replaced.”

About this place

The Hauptstrasse in Heidelberg is the long, car-free main street of one of Germany's most romantic old towns. Running from Bismarckplatz almost to the Karlstor gate, parallel to the Neckar River, it links baroque mansions, churches, museums, university squares and hundreds of shops. If you are spending a day in Heidelberg, this is the street that ties everything together, from the Market Square to the funicular up to the castle.

How long is it, and why is it special?

The whole street measures about 1.8 km (1.1 miles); the city describes the pedestrian zone between Bismarckplatz and the Market Square as roughly 1.4 km. It was laid out around 1220 with the medieval town and has carried the name Hauptstrasse ("main street") since 1689. Most of what you see was rebuilt in baroque style after French troops devastated Heidelberg in the Nine Years' War. Traffic was banned in 1969, the last streetcar ran in 1976, and the pedestrian zone was completed in 1978.

In 2025 a retail study by Localyzer and hystreet ranked it Germany's most diverse shopping street, with 230 stores, 95 of them independent rather than chains.

Things to see along the way

  • Bismarckplatz end: department stores, cafés and the transit hub.
  • Palais Morass (No. 97): home of the Kurpfälzisches Museum, the city's art and history museum.
  • University Square: the Old and New University buildings, with the famous Student Prison a short walk away.
  • Market Square: the Church of the Holy Spirit, the town hall and the Renaissance Haus zum Ritter (No. 178), one of the few buildings that survived 1693.
  • Kornmarkt and Karlsplatz: classic postcard views up to Heidelberg Castle and the lower station of the funicular.

Tips for your visit

The street is public and open around the clock, with no admission fee. Weekday mornings are the calmest; Saturdays and summer afternoons get very crowded. Walk from west to east so the castle comes into view gradually. Note that most German shops close on Sundays, though cafés and restaurants stay open. Paving is mostly level, which helps with strollers and wheelchairs, while some side lanes are steeper.

How to get there

Heidelberg is about 80 km south of Frankfurt Airport and roughly an hour away by train via Mannheim; regional trains accept the Deutschlandticket. From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, any tram or bus to Bismarckplatz puts you at the western end of the Hauptstrasse within minutes. Driving into the narrow Old Town is not recommended; use a garage on its edge or park and ride.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely, as the backbone of any day trip from Frankfurt or Stuttgart. Allow at least one to two hours with stops, more if you go shopping or visit the museum. Nearby, the Old Bridge, the funicular to Heidelberg Castle and the Philosophers' Walk across the river are all within easy reach.
