About this place

The Sanspareil Rock Garden (Felsengarten Sanspareil) in Wonsees, near Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, is one of the most unusual 18th-century gardens in Europe. Instead of clipped hedges and fountains, Margravine Wilhelmine of Bayreuth turned a beech forest full of giant limestone rocks into a storybook landscape of grottoes, a ruined theater and lookout points. The name means "without equal," and walking through it free of charge, any day of the year, you will see why.

Wilhelmine's Literary Garden

Wilhelmine, the sister of Prussia's Frederick the Great, and her husband Margrave Friedrich created the garden between 1744 and 1748. Inspired by Chinese landscape gardens, they left the natural rock formations, remnants of a reef in a tropical Jurassic sea, largely as they were and added small buildings and garden features around them. From 1748, the rocks were linked to the adventures of Telemachus, son of Odysseus, as told in a popular French novel by Fénelon, so courtiers could "travel" through Greek myth on a stroll.

What to See

  • Ruin and Grotto Theater: the only garden structure surviving almost unchanged since 1744; a local theater company has staged summer performances here since 1985.
  • Vulcan's Grotto and Calypso's Grotto: the largest cave in the garden and the nymph's grotto beside the Belvedere rock.
  • Oriental Building (Morgenländischer Bau): a small palace from 1746–47 with a beech tree growing in its courtyard, now a hands-on museum about the garden's history.
  • Zwernitz Castle: first recorded in 1156, perched on a dolomite crag; climb the keep for views over Franconian Switzerland Nature Park and see an exhibition on princely hunting.

The park covers about 13 hectares (32 acres) and stretches roughly 1.3 km (0.8 miles) through the woods.

Tickets and Opening Hours

As of October 2026, the rock garden is open year-round and free. The Oriental Building and Zwernitz Castle open April–September daily 9 a.m.–6 p.m. and from October 1 to mid-October 10 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Mondays (except some holidays) and closed mid-October through March. A joint ticket costs €5 (reduced €4). Information is mainly in German.

How to Get There

Wonsees lies about 20 km (12 miles) west of Bayreuth, roughly a 1-hour drive from Nuremberg via the A9 and A70 (exit Schirradorf). There is parking for cars and buses at the park entrance. Public transportation is limited, so a rental car is by far the easiest option; Bayreuth itself is reachable by regional train from Nuremberg.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially if you are visiting Bayreuth's UNESCO-listed Margravial Opera House, which was also built for Wilhelmine. Allow 1.5 to 3 hours, wear sturdy shoes for the steps and rocky paths, and stop at the café in the old kitchen building (April to October). Kids love scrambling between the rocks and caves; note that the castle rooms are only reachable by stairs.
