About this place

The Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers (Basilika Vierzehnheiligen) near Bad Staffelstein in Upper Franconia is one of the finest Baroque churches in Germany. Designed by Balthasar Neumann, the architect of the UNESCO-listed Würzburg Residence, it rises above the Main valley opposite Banz Abbey. Its golden twin-tower facade and dazzling white-and-gold Rococo interior make it one of the top things to see in northern Bavaria and an easy day trip from Bamberg.

Where it is and how to get there

Vierzehnheiligen lies in the Lichtenfels district, roughly halfway between Bamberg and Coburg. The nearest train stations are Bad Staffelstein and Lichtenfels on the regional line from Bamberg, covered by the Deutschlandticket. From Bad Staffelstein, a footpath climbs to the basilica; allow a good hour on foot. Nuremberg, the closest major city with an airport, is the usual gateway: take a train to Bamberg and change there. Drivers will find parking for visitors and pilgrim buses at the site.

The legend and the church

According to tradition, a shepherd named Hermann Leicht saw a vision of the Christ Child surrounded by children here in 1445 and 1446. They revealed themselves as the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints popular in medieval Germany, and asked for a chapel. The present church was built between 1743 and 1772; after Neumann died in 1753, Johann Thomas Nissler completed it. A lightning fire in 1835 destroyed the roof, organ and towers, which were later restored. Franciscan friars have looked after the pilgrimage since 1839, and the church was made a minor basilica in 1897.

What to see

  • The two 75-meter towers, visible from far across the valley
  • The Altar of Mercy in the middle of the nave, with figures of the Fourteen Holy Helpers
  • Stucco by Johann Michael Feuchtmayer the Younger and ceiling frescoes by Giuseppe Appiani
  • Neumann's flowing sequence of oval spaces, which makes the interior feel weightless
  • A 1999 Rieger organ and six new bells from 2019

The Fourteen Holy Helpers were especially venerated in late medieval Franconia, each saint invoked against a particular affliction. They include St. George, St. Blaise, St. Christopher, St. Vitus, St. Barbara, St. Catherine and St. Margaret, and kids enjoy spotting them by their symbols, such as a dragon, a tower or a wheel. Remember that this is an active pilgrimage church: dress respectfully and keep voices low.

Opening hours and admission

Admission is free. From October 1 to April 30 the basilica is open daily 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from May 1 to September 30 from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Services take priority, so check the mass schedule online before you go; on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the church is cleaned and no tours or services take place. Guided tours can be requested through the basilica office. Hours as of October 2026.

Is it worth visiting?

Definitely, especially if you love Baroque architecture. Around half a million visitors come each year, so weekday mornings are the calmest. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the church, more if you add a walk. Pair it with Banz Abbey across the valley, a hike up the Staffelberg past the Trunk monastery brewery (about 11 km round trip), or an afternoon in the UNESCO-listed old town of Bamberg.
