About this place

Albrecht Dürer's House in Nuremberg is the former home and workshop of Germany's most celebrated Renaissance artist. Dürer lived and worked in this striking half-timbered house by the Tiergärtnertor gate for almost two decades. Today it is a museum where you can walk through his kitchen, living rooms and studio, and watch prints being made the way they were 500 years ago. It is one of the top things to do in Nuremberg's Old Town.

Where it is and how to get there

The house stands at Albrecht-Dürer-Straße 39 on Tiergärtnertorplatz, just below Nuremberg Castle. Nuremberg is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Munich and 2 hours from Frankfurt by ICE train, so it works as a day trip. Trams 4 and 10 stop at Tiergärtnertor right next to the house; alternatively, ride subway line U1 to Lorenzkirche and walk about ten minutes uphill through the Old Town. Local transit is covered by the Deutschlandticket.

A short history

The house was built around 1420. Dürer bought it in 1509 and lived here with his wife Agnes, his mother and his apprentices until his death in 1528. The city purchased it in 1826, and it has served as a memorial and museum since 1871. Badly damaged in World War II, it fared better than much of the Old Town and reopened in 1949.

What to see

  • The kitchen, largely preserved in its original state
  • The living rooms, furnished in 19th-century historicist style
  • The second-floor workshop, with a copperplate press and a letterpress; live printing demonstrations take place on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Original prints by Dürer: the exhibition "Original Dürer! The Etchings on Iron" runs from October 16, 2026, to February 14, 2027

Note that Dürer's famous paintings are not here; they hang in museums such as Munich's Alte Pinakothek. This house is about his life and printmaking.

English tours

A guide dressed as Agnes Dürer, the artist's wife, leads costumed tours of the house. The tour in English runs every Saturday at 2 p.m., which makes it a great option for international visitors.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026, the house is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; it also opens on Mondays from July to September and during the Christmas market, and is closed on December 24 and 25. Admission is €7.50 for adults and €2.50 reduced (ages 4 to 18 and students); a small-group ticket for one adult with up to three children costs €8.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are interested in art history or want to see what a wealthy Nuremberg home looked like around 1500. Allow about one to one and a half hours. Keep in mind that the house is a historic monument with no elevator, so wheelchair users can only visit the ground floor.
