About this place

Mauerpark (Wall Park) in Berlin lies on the former border strip between the districts of Prenzlauer Berg and Gesundbrunnen. Today it is a lively public park with grassy hills, a graffiti wall, and an amphitheater, famous for its Sunday flea market and open-air karaoke. If you are wondering whether Mauerpark is worth visiting, it is one of the best places in Berlin to see how a Cold War death strip turned into everyday leisure space.

From border zone to public park

Schwedter Straße was first a district boundary between Wedding and Prenzlauer Berg and, from 1949, the sector and East German border. The stadium side lay in East Berlin, while the former freight yard was in West Berlin. The first section of the park opened on November 9, 1994, designed by Gustav Lange under the motto "From border zone to free space." A stretch of the rear-area wall still stands on the slope by the Jahn sports park and is known today for its constantly changing graffiti.

The flea market started on July 11, 2004, on the former railway land next to the park and had more than 400 stalls in 2022. Bearpit Karaoke in the amphitheater began in 2009 and regularly draws more than 1,000 participants on summer Sundays. A 2020 extension roughly doubled the park to about 14.3 hectares (35 acres).

What to see and do

  • Sunday flea market: vintage goods, street food, and crafts along the old railway line
  • Bearpit Karaoke: open-air singing in the amphitheater on summer Sundays
  • Graffiti wall: a remnant of the Wall, constantly repainted
  • Hills and lawns: good for a picnic with a view toward the TV Tower
  • Max-Schmeling-Halle and Jahn sports park: both border the park directly

Planning your visit

The park is free and open to everyone. A stroll takes 1 to 2 hours; on flea market Sundays plan on 2 to 4 hours. According to berlin.de, the market runs on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with free entry, though holidays may differ, so check ahead. Sundays are crowded; for a quieter visit, go on a weekday or early on Sunday.

Park rules: dogs may run off leash only in the fenced dog area on Bernauer Straße. Grilling is allowed only in designated areas and during set hours, with charcoal or wood only, no gas or disposable grills. In long dry spells, the district can ban grilling entirely.

How to get there

The easiest way is the U2 to Eberswalder Straße or tram M10; both are a few minutes' walk from the park. A single ticket in zone AB is enough, and the Deutschlandticket is valid on local transport. Parking nearby is difficult, especially on Sundays, so cycling or public transport is best. For the Bernauer Straße entrance, use the address Bernauer Straße 63-64, 13355 Berlin.
