About this place

The Botanical Garden Munich-Nymphenburg covers 21.2 hectares and is one of the larger botanical gardens in Germany. It lies just north of the Nymphenburg palace park and grows about 16,000 plant species, from alpine flowers and rhododendrons to tropical greenhouses. In winter, entry to the outdoor garden is free. If you are looking for things to do in Munich that are green and calm, it is worth a visit in any season.

What makes it special

The first Munich botanical garden was founded in 1812 near today's Karlsplatz. The new garden was planned in 1909, built from 1910 and opened in May 1914, with Karl von Goebel as its first director. The greenhouses, built from 1910 to 1912 by Ludwig Ullmann, cover more than 4,500 square meters and show plants from humid tropics, cool mountain forests and deserts. Between December and March, butterflies fly freely in greenhouse no. 4, and timed tickets go on sale on December 1, 2026.

Highlights outdoors include the ornamental courtyard in front of the main building, the alpine garden by the large pond, a rhododendron grove, an arboretum and a rose garden. There is also a café.
