About this place

Speyer Cathedral, known in German as the Kaiserdom, is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Rising above the Rhine in the Palatinate region, this massive red-sandstone basilica served as the burial place of medieval Salian, Hohenstaufen, and Habsburg emperors and kings. If you want to understand the Holy Roman Empire, few places in Germany tell the story as powerfully, and entry to the main church is free.

Where it is and how to get there

Speyer is a small, walkable city in Rhineland-Palatinate, close to Mannheim and Heidelberg and about 100 km (60 miles) south of Frankfurt Airport. The city is connected to the regional S-Bahn Rhine-Neckar network, so it makes an easy day trip from Heidelberg or Mannheim; regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket. From Speyer Hauptbahnhof, city bus 561 runs every 10 minutes to the "Dom/Stadthaus" stop. Drivers should use the "Museum" parking lot at the Technik Museum, about a 10-minute walk away, since the closer lot is currently unavailable.

A cathedral of emperors

Emperor Conrad II began construction around 1030 (German sources suggest as early as 1025), and the church was consecrated in 1061. His grandson Henry IV, famous for his power struggle with Pope Gregory VII, had it rebuilt on an even grander scale, completed in 1106. UNESCO describes it as a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire. French troops set fire to the town in 1689, gutting the interior and looting the imperial tombs. The neo-Romanesque west front you see today dates from 1854–1858.

Things to see

  • The nave: The building is 134 meters (440 ft) long, and its unadorned Romanesque arches create an atmosphere of calm grandeur.
  • Crypt and imperial tombs: Consecrated around 1041 and almost unchanged since, the crypt covers about 850 square meters and is considered the largest Romanesque columned hall in Europe.
  • Imperial Hall (Kaisersaal): Since 2012 it has displayed huge 19th-century frescoes by Johann Schraudolph that were once removed from the cathedral walls.
  • Viewing platform: Located about 55.5 meters up the southwest tower, it offers sweeping views over the Rhine plain.

As of October 2026, entry to the cathedral is free. Paid areas:

The crypt opens 30 minutes later and closes 30 minutes earlier. The tower and Imperial Hall are open April through October only (last entry 5 p.m.); in winter they can be visited only on a booked guided tour. Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are interested in medieval history or architecture. Plan one hour for the church and crypt, or two hours including the tower. Afterward, stroll along Maximilianstraße to the Altpörtel city gate, or visit the nearby Technik Museum Speyer, which is a big hit with kids thanks to its aircraft, space shuttle, and submarine.
