Technik Museum Speyer is one of Germany's best places to get up close to giant aircraft and spacecraft. On the site of a historic airfield in the cathedral city of Speyer, you can walk through a Lufthansa Boeing 747, step out onto its wing 20 meters above the ground, explore a submarine and see the Soviet space shuttle Buran. It makes an easy day trip from Frankfurt, Heidelberg or Mannheim.
Speyer opened an airfield in 1912, and an aircraft factory, the Pfalz-Flugzeugwerke, followed next door a year later. Its production hall, the Liller Halle, was originally built near Lille in France in 1913 and moved to Speyer after World War I. The museum opened in 1991 and is run, like its sister museum in Sinsheim, by a nonprofit association. Its star exhibits arrived later: the Antonov An-22 in 1999, the Boeing 747 in 2002 and the Buran shuttle in 2008, shipped up the Rhine.
The museum is open every day of the year, Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm and weekends and holidays 9 am to 7 pm (as of October 2026). Admission is 25 EUR for adults and 20 EUR for children aged 5 to 14; a combo ticket with an IMAX documentary costs 30 EUR or 25 EUR. Children under 5 and anyone celebrating a birthday get in free. Plan at least half a day.
Speyer lies on the Rhine about 25 km south of Mannheim, roughly an hour by car from Frankfurt. By train, go to Speyer Hauptbahnhof (S-Bahn trains from Mannheim and Heidelberg; the Deutschlandticket is valid) and take bus 561 to "Speyer, Technik-Museum". Drivers should currently use the Hockenheim exit of the A61 because the Speyer exit is closed for construction. Parking on site is paid, with the first 30 minutes free.
Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the museum grounds, outdoors included, except assistance dogs. Climbing up to the 747 and the An-22 requires stairs and a head for heights. Free lockers are available in the lobby, and there are restaurants on site.
Yes, especially for families and aviation fans. Few museums let you walk inside a jumbo jet or stand beneath a Soviet shuttle. Combine it with Speyer Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about a kilometer away, for a full day.
Täglich (365 Tage im Jahr) geöffnet: Montag bis Freitag 9–18 Uhr, Samstag, Sonntag und Feiertage 9–19 Uhr; geänderte Zeiten an Weihnachten und Neujahr.
Museum: Erwachsene 25 €, Kinder 5–14 Jahre 20 €; Kombi mit IMAX DOME 30 € bzw. 25 €; Kinder unter 5 Jahren und Geburtstagskinder frei.
