What to eat and drink
Frankfurt has Christmas specialities you'll hardly find anywhere else:
- Bethmännchen: small marzipan balls with three almond halves – an Advent must.
- Brenten: traditional Frankfurt marzipan biscuits.
- Hot apple wine (heißer Apfelwein): Frankfurt's answer to mulled wine.
- Quetschemännchen: lucky figures made of dried plums and nuts joined with wire – traditionally a chimney sweep or musician. According to the tourism board, shy suitors in the 19th century gave them as love tokens: if the lady kept it, she was interested.
- The Christmas market mug: a new design every year, much loved by collectors.
2026 prices haven't been published yet.

A little history
According to visitFrankfurt, the "Christkindchesmarkt" was long a purely local affair – outside traders weren't allowed. A highlight came at Christmas 1498, when the wedding of Landgrave William of Hesse to the daughter of the Elector Palatine was celebrated; the chronicle mentions 1,000 horses. The Christmas tree only arrived in the 19th century. Until the 1870s and 1880s, Frankfurt parents bought their children's toys almost exclusively at the market.
With kids
The children's market on the Mainkai has free hands-on activities: theatre, music and storytelling on board the illuminated Primus Christmas boat, a craft room for making gifts and a vintage carousel. New in 2026: more than 50 Christmas trees decorated by Frankfurt children are spread across the whole market. The steam train rides on 12 and 13 December are another family highlight.
An Advent day in Frankfurt: our suggestion
- 10am – Römerberg at opening time: photograph the Christmas tree in front of the half-timbered row while the square is empty, and buy Bethmännchen and Brenten.
- 11am – New Old Town and cathedral: a few steps on, the reconstructed lanes lead to the cathedral – step inside.
- 12.30pm – Kleinmarkthalle: lunch among the food stalls; Frankfurt's famous green sauce is served here all year.
- 2pm – St Paul's Church: the Artists' Christmas Market opens at noon, with one-off pieces by local artists.
- 4pm – Mainkai and Iron Footbridge: with kids to the Christmas boat; without, onto the bridge for skyline views at dusk.
- 6pm – tower brass: on Wednesdays and Saturdays, back to Römerberg with a hot apple wine.
- Later – Main Tower or Sachsenhausen: city lights from above, or dinner in an apple-wine tavern across the river.
Practical tips for international visitors
Cash, cards and Pfand
Most stalls take cards, but not all – carry some cash. Hot drinks come in deposit mugs (Pfand); return them for a refund or keep them as souvenirs.
When to go
- Weekdays from 10am: the market opens early – mornings are quiet on Römerberg and Paulsplatz.
- Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 6pm: tower brass at the Old St Nicholas Church (see dates above).
- Sundays: opens at 11am.
- Last day: Tuesday 22 December – earlier than in many other cities.
Getting there
Frankfurt Airport has its own long-distance station and S-Bahn lines S8/S9 reach Hauptwache in about 15 minutes. From the main station, take the S-Bahn to Hauptwache or U4/U5 to Dom/Römer. City car parks fill up at peak times.
Accessibility
At the opening ceremony there's a limited wheelchair area in front of the Römerberg stage, reached via Limpurger Gasse on the left side of the stage. Römerberg and Paulsplatz are partly cobbled.
Where to stay
Frankfurt is a trade-fair city: if a fair is on during Advent, hotel prices soar, so check the fair calendar before booking. Sachsenhausen across the river is a charming alternative.
Gift idea: Frankfurt's skyline and Römer as a personalised poster.
Good to know
- Collect the mugs: the Frankfurt market mug has a new design every year – keep it instead of returning it for the deposit.
- Dress warmly: a cold wind often blows along the Main – warm shoes and a hat help.
Nearby: our tips
- Römerberg: the Römer town hall in the middle of the market.
- New Frankfurt Old Town: reconstructed lanes between Römer and cathedral.
- Frankfurt Cathedral: where emperors were crowned.
- Iron Footbridge: skyline views and the starting point of the steam trains.

- Main Tower: observation deck high above the city.
Our audio guide “Frankfurt: Emperors, Markets and Apple Wine” starts at the Hauptwache, in the middle of the Christmas market, and finishes with a glass of apple wine – 14 stops over 3.2 km, first two free.
