Nuremberg Christmas Market 2026: dates, opening hours, tips
Table of contents

On Friday 27 November 2026 at 5.30pm, Nuremberg's Christkind (the Christ Child, played by a young local woman) recites her prologue – and the market opens that the city itself calls "surely the most famous Christkindlesmarkt in the world". Until Christmas Eve, the Christkindlesmarkt turns the Hauptmarkt into the "little town of wood and cloth": red-and-white striped stall roofs, the smell of gingerbread, gold-foil angels. Here are the official 2026 dates and hours, a map of the three market areas and tips for visitors from abroad.

All three areas are a few minutes apart: Rathausplatz is a one-minute walk from the Hauptmarkt, Hans-Sachs-Platz about four minutes to the east.

What makes this market special

The Christkind and the prologue

The highlight of the season is opening night, when the Christkind speaks her prologue from the gallery of the Frauenkirche above the square. If you want to be there, arrive at least an hour early – the square gets packed. Prefer it quieter? Watch the live broadcast the organiser points to and visit the next morning.

The "little town of wood and cloth"

According to the organiser there are 168 wooden stalls with red-and-white cloth roofs on Hauptmarkt and Rathausplatz, and around 180 traders with a deliberately traditional range. Since 1981 the city has awarded prizes to the most beautiful stalls – look for the plaques. Typical buys:

  • Nürnberger Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and fruit bread
  • Rauschgoldengel – gold-foil angels, Nuremberg's signature decoration
  • Zwetschgenmännchen – little figures made of dried plums
  • Nativity scenes, candles, toys and crafts

Sister Cities Market

On Rathausplatz, Nuremberg's twin towns present crafts and food from around the world – a nice change between gingerbread and mulled wine. It closes one day earlier, on 23 December.

Children's Christmas on Hans-Sachs-Platz

Since 1999 families have had their own area next to the main market, with vintage carousels, a steam train and a grand tiered carousel in the middle. In hands-on huts – candle workshop, Christmas bakery, soap workshop – kids make small gifts themselves. It stays open longer than the main market, until 30 December 2026.

What to eat and drink

  • Nürnberger Rostbratwürste: small grilled sausages, classically three in a bread roll ("Drei im Weggla").
  • Fresh Lebkuchen: Elisenlebkuchen are the finest kind, with a high nut content.
  • Glühwein: served in the market's own mugs with a deposit.
  • Feuerzangenbowle: mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar cone set alight above it.

2026 prices haven't been published yet, so we're not quoting estimates.

A day at the Christkindlesmarkt: our suggestion

  1. 10am – Hauptmarkt at opening time: the lanes are still empty. Look at the award-winning stalls and buy gingerbread and gold-foil angels while you still have room to choose. Don't miss the Schöner Brunnen fountain at the corner of the square.
  2. 11.30am – Rathausplatz: taste specialities from Nuremberg's twin towns at the Sister Cities Market – a good moment for an early lunch.
  3. 1pm – up to the castle: walk up Burgstraße past Albrecht Dürer's House; from the top you get the best view over the Old Town roofs.
  4. 3pm – museum or children's market: in bad weather warm up in the German National Museum; with kids, head to Hans-Sachs-Platz.
  5. From 4.30pm – lights on: when it gets dark the stalls and the Frauenkirche glow. Time for mulled wine and sausages, even if it gets busier.

Shopping tips

Gingerbread is heavy and breaks easily, so buy it on your last day or ask for good packaging. With glass ornaments, ask where they're made – many traders happily explain what they produce themselves. If you want to find a stall again, note its number; the organiser publishes a stall map.

Practical tips for international visitors

Cash, cards and the mug deposit

Many stalls take cards, but not all – keep some cash in small notes and coins. With hot drinks you pay a deposit (Pfand) for the mug; return it to a stall to get the money back, or keep the mug as a souvenir.

When to go

  • Weekday mornings (10am–12pm): the calmest time to browse.
  • Evenings and Advent weekends: wonderful atmosphere, but the narrow lanes between stalls move at walking pace.
  • Christmas Eve: closes at 2pm.

Getting there

Nuremberg is a major ICE hub, about an hour from Munich and two from Frankfurt. From the main station walk through the Königstor gate and along Königstraße, past St. Lorenz Church, to the Hauptmarkt in about 15 minutes. Drivers are advised to use the signposted park-and-ride sites at weekends and continue by public transport. Nuremberg Airport is connected to the main station by U-Bahn.

With kids

Start at the children's market, then cross the main market. A pushchair is hard to manoeuvre in the evening crowds – mornings work much better. For a warm-up break, the German National Museum has a great toy and folk-art collection.

Accessibility

The square is flat but paved; the gaps between stalls are narrow. With a wheelchair, weekday mornings are best.

Where to stay

Old Town hotels sell out early for Advent weekends. The area around the main station and neighbouring Fürth (direct U-Bahn) are good alternatives; weekday rates are usually lower.

Gift idea: design a personalised poster of Nuremberg as a keepsake of your market visit.

Nearby: our tips

Start at the station with our audio guide “Nuremberg: Masters, Inventors and Three in a Bun”: 13 stops over 2.8 km from the King's Gate across the Hauptmarkt to the castle and the bratwurst grill, in English or German, first two stops free.

All sights: Nuremberg.
