Rothenburg: Too Beautiful to Fall

„Over three litres of wine for a whole town – or just a legend?”

12 stops 85 min 2.8 km

About this place

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the picture-perfect medieval town many visitors imagine when they think of Germany. Its old town of half-timbered houses, towers and gates sits high above the Tauber River valley, enclosed by a nearly complete city wall that you can still walk along. As the highlight of the Romantic Road, Rothenburg is one of the most rewarding things to do in Bavaria, especially if you stay overnight.

Where it is and how to get there

Rothenburg lies in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, roughly between Würzburg and Nuremberg. By car, it is reached via the A7 autobahn; large parking lots sit outside the walls, and the old town itself is best explored on foot.

By train, take a regional train to Steinach and change to the short branch line to Rothenburg station, then walk into the old town. Connections run from Würzburg and Ansbach, and the Deutschlandticket is valid on these regional trains. From Munich or Frankfurt, expect a journey of several hours with changes, so many visitors combine Rothenburg with a Romantic Road trip or an overnight stay.

Why it is special

Rothenburg was a Free Imperial City from 1274 to 1803. After the Thirty Years' War it lost its wealth and influence, which is precisely why its medieval streets survived largely unchanged. The town's favorite legend, the Meistertrunk, tells of a former mayor who drank about 3.25 liters of wine in one gulp in 1631 to save the town from General Tilly. Historians consider it a later invention, but the story is still celebrated today. A bombing raid on March 31, 1945 damaged part of the eastern old town, which was later rebuilt.

Top things to see

  • Plönlein: the famous little square with a yellow half-timbered house between two towers
  • Market Square and Town Hall: climb the 220 steps of the town hall tower for the best view over the rooftops
  • St. Jakob's Church: home to Tilman Riemenschneider's carved Holy Blood Altar
  • City wall: long stretches of the covered walkway are free to walk
  • Castle Garden: sweeping views over the Tauber Valley

Opening hours and tours

As of October 2026, the old town is open at all times and free to explore. According to the town's visitor flyer, the town hall tower opens daily from April to October, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m., with shorter hours in winter. The evening Night Watchman tour, which starts on the Market Square, has been a favorite of English-speaking visitors for decades; check current times and prices with the tourist office at Marktplatz 2.

Museums and walks

Beyond the streets themselves, the Medieval Crime Museum covers centuries of law and punishment, the Imperial City Museum tells the town's story, and the German Christmas Museum keeps the holiday spirit alive all year. A good loop runs from the Market Square down Herrngasse to the Castle Garden, back to the Plönlein and on to the Spital Gate, where you can climb onto the wall walk.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, but timing matters. Midday in summer can be very crowded with tour groups. Stay overnight to enjoy the quiet streets in the early morning and late evening. From late November, the Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market (starting November 20, 2026) adds extra magic. Cobblestones and steep lanes make wheelchair and stroller access challenging.

Christmas market 2026

The Reiterlesmarkt on the market square between the town hall and St. James's Church runs from 20 November to 23 December 2026. Listed hours are Sunday to Thursday 11 am to 7 pm and Friday and Saturday 11 am to 8 pm; the market is closed on the Sunday of the Dead. The event calendar shows slightly different times on some days, so check before you go. More in our guide Rothenburg ob der Tauber Christmas market 2026.
