Würzburg Christmas Market 2026: dates, opening hours, tips

From Friday 27 November 2026, the Würzburg Christmas market is back on the Marktplatz, right in front of the Falkenhaus and the Gothic Marienkapelle. It runs until 23 December 2026 and opens as early as 10am from Monday to Saturday. In addition there is the Artists' Christmas Market in the town hall and the Bürgerspital Winterzauber in the historic courtyard of the wine tavern, which stays open until 10 January 2027. Here are all the dates and opening hours for 2026, a day plan with the Residence and the fortress, and tips for getting there.

How the markets are laid out

The Christmas market spreads across the Oberer and Unterer Markt, Eichhornstraße and the square Am Grafeneckart. On the Marktplatz the stalls stand in front of the Falkenhaus, which also houses the tourist information, and in front of the Marienkapelle. The town hall with the artists' market is only a good 250 metres from the Marktplatz as the crow flies. From there it is about 440 metres to the Old Main Bridge and about 640 metres to the Residence.

The markets in detail

Würzburg Christmas Market on the Marktplatz

The city describes its market as one of the most atmospheric in Germany: lovingly decorated stalls with gift ideas and crafts such as candles, nativity figures, pottery, household goods, textiles and tools. There is also mulled wine, hot drinks, Feuerzangenbowle (flaming punch), sweet treats and savoury Franconian snacks. Highlights include a visit from Saint Nicholas, candle dipping with real wax and live music on the Christmas market stage at the Unterer Markt. The city hasn't yet published the date of Nicholas's visit or the 2026 stage programme; the page currently shows the 2025 programme.

Artists' Christmas Market in the town hall

In the town hall foyer, craftspeople exhibit silver and gold jewellery, handmade baubles, watercolours and oil paintings, wooden toys, willow baskets and knitwear. The entrance is in the town hall courtyard on Rückermainstraße. It is open on Advent Saturdays from 10am to 7:30pm and on Advent Sundays from 11am to 7:30pm. On 28 November it closes at 6pm, and on 20 December it stays closed because the Open Carol Singing takes place in the courtyard that evening.

For almost 50 years Würzburg residents have gathered on the last Sunday before Christmas to sing together in the town hall courtyard, around the Christmas tree in the Ehrenhof. In bad weather the singing moves to the Marienkapelle at the Unterer Markt. In 2026 the date is 20 December. A songbook, the Würzburger Weihnachtsbüchlein, is available free at the stalls at the start of the market, at the tourist information in the Falkenhaus and at the Bürgerbüro while stocks last.

Bürgerspital Winterzauber

In the courtyard of the Bürgerspital wine tavern the Christmas season begins as early as 13 November 2026 and lasts until 10 January 2027 inclusive. The Winterzauber opens daily from 4pm, with mulled wine from the estate, punch and light displays. The tavern calls it the Christmas market insider tip for Würzburg. Between the holidays you therefore still have a destination when the market on the Marktplatz is closed. Events include 13 November (opening party), 5 December (Nicholas party) and 23 December (Schlager edition).

What to eat and drink

• Mulled wine and Feuerzangenbowle: the city names both explicitly for the market on the Marktplatz.
• Savoury snacks: the city describes the food as varied, with sweet and savoury dishes.
• Bürgerspital Winzerglühwein: at the Winterzauber you get the house's original winegrower's mulled wine, plus punch and hot Aperol.
• Franconian wine: Würzburg lies in the Franconian wine country; the Juliusspital has a 225-metre-long wooden cask cellar with 220 oak casks.

Mulled wine prices for 2026 haven't been published yet. We don't give estimates.

With children

For children the Marktplatz has Saint Nicholas (date still open) and candle dipping with real wax. The city names both as highlights of the market. With a pushchair you'll be most relaxed in the morning, just after the market opens.

Your Advent day in Würzburg: our suggestion

1. 10am, Christmas market: The market opens. On Sundays it starts at 11am.
2. 11am, Residence: The Würzburg Residence opens at 10am in winter, with last entry at 4pm (adults 10 euros). Especially worth seeing are Neumann's staircase with Tiepolo's giant fresco and the Imperial Hall. The court garden and the court church are free.
3. 1pm, Cathedral: St Kilian's Cathedral is open daily from 8am to 6pm, and entry is free.
4. 2pm, Old Main Bridge: On the Old Main Bridge stand twelve Baroque saints, and the fortress looms behind.
5. 3pm, Marienberg Fortress: The outdoor area of the fortress is open in winter from 10am to 4:30pm and free to enter, closed on Mondays.
6. From 5pm, the market by lamplight: Back on the Marktplatz you have until 8:30pm. If you'd like a glass of wine afterwards, head to the Winterzauber at the Bürgerspital.

When to go

• Monday to Saturday from 10am: the market opens early, and it is still quiet then.
• Sunday: starts only at 11am, but runs until 8:30pm.
• First Advent (29 November) and the weekends after: expect many day visitors.
• 20 December: Open Carol Singing; the artists' market is closed that day.

From the main station it is about 800 metres as the crow flies to the Marktplatz. For buses and trams the city refers to the interactive WVV network map, and for cars to a live view of free parking spaces; both are linked from the City of Würzburg's page.
