About this place

Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg crowns a hill about 100 m above the Main River and is the city's most famous landmark. For nearly five centuries it was the seat of Würzburg's prince-bishops, before they moved into the grand Residence in town. Today you can explore Baroque bastions, a medieval keep, vineyards and some of the best views in Franconia, all within walking distance of the Old Town.

Where it is and how to get there

Würzburg lies in northern Bavaria on the Romantic Road, about an hour by ICE train from Frankfurt or Nuremberg.

  • On foot: From the Old Main Bridge, a steep path climbs through the vineyards to the fortress in roughly 30 minutes.
  • By bus: From April to October, the city's culture bus line runs up to the "Festung" stop.
  • By car: Paid parking is available at the fortress.
  • By train: Würzburg Hauptbahnhof is on major ICE routes. Regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket.

A short history

The hill was fortified in prehistoric times. Around 700, a Frankish duke founded a convent here, and the round St. Mary's Church in the courtyard is considered one of the oldest church buildings in Germany. A castle with a keep and a 102 m deep well followed around 1200. From 1253 to 1719 the prince-bishops ruled from here. The fortress held out against rebel farmers during the Peasants' War of 1525 but fell to the Swedish army in 1631. Later bishops turned it into a Renaissance palace and then a massive Baroque fortress. It was badly damaged in the bombing of March 16, 1945 and rebuilt after the war.

What to see

  • St. Mary's Church: a small rotunda with roots in the early Middle Ages.
  • The well temple: covering the 102 m deep well.
  • The Prince's Garden: a tiny Baroque garden with the classic view over the river, bridge and Old Town.
  • Bastions and gates: walk the ramparts for wide views over the vineyards.
  • Museum für Franken: the regional museum for Franconian art and history, with an important collection of works by the sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider. It is being redesigned but remains open; check museum-franken.de for current hours.

Tickets, tours and opening hours

The grounds and viewpoints are free to explore. According to the Bavarian Palace Administration, the outdoor area is open April to October 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and November to March 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Mondays except some holidays. Because of construction, the inner castle is currently closed to individual visitors, so the best way inside is a 60-minute guided tour for €5 (reduced €4, under 18 free). English tours run April to October on weekends and holidays at 3 p.m. (as of October 2026). Wheelchair users unfortunately cannot join the castle tours.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes. Even without a tour, the walk up through the vineyards and the panorama from the Prince's Garden are highlights of any trip to Würzburg. Allow about 90 minutes for the grounds, or half a day with a tour and the museum. Late afternoon light is best for photos.
