The markets between the cathedral and the harbour line up along the Rhine. From Roncalliplatz to Alter Markt it's about five minutes on foot, then three more to Heumarkt. Walking along the river to the Chocolate Museum takes around 15 minutes. Neumarkt and the Stadtgarten lie west of the Old Town and are a short tram ride away.

The markets one by one
Cathedral Christmas Market – "Market of Hearts"
The market on Roncalliplatz has Cologne's most famous backdrop: the Gothic west front of the cathedral rises above the stalls, and in the evening a huge canopy of lights stretches over the square. According to the organiser there are more than 140 stalls with crafts, gifts and food, and over 100 free shows on the central stage each season, plus a children's programme. Note that this market closes on 23 December and is completely closed on Sunday 22 November (Totensonntag). On Saturdays it opens at 10am – the best time to see the stalls without the crowds.
Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town
On Alter Markt and Heumarkt, the market tells the legend of Cologne's helpful house elves, the Heinzelmännchen. More than 100 stalls are grouped into themed lanes; most craftspeople are in the crafts lane on Alter Markt. The highlight is the open-air ice rink on Heumarkt, with straights over 100 metres long looping around the equestrian statue. There are also curling lanes, a Ferris wheel and a vintage carousel.
Two different dates apply: the Alter Markt section runs from 23 November to 23 December 2026, while Heumarkt with the rink stays open until 10 January 2027, except 24 and 25 December. That makes it a good pick if you're in Cologne between Christmas and New Year.
Angels' Market on Neumarkt
Between the shopping streets Schildergasse and Mittelstraße, Neumarkt turns into a world of angels: white stalls, lights in the trees and angels on stilts in the evening. The 2026 programme promises giant figures from Cologne's Hänneschen puppet theatre, and an angel and St Nicholas hand out small gifts to children. On Fridays and Saturdays the market stays open until 10pm and the mulled wine stalls until 11pm.
Stadtgarten Christmas Market
The smallest of the big markets and, for many locals, the cosiest. Under old trees you'll find huts with more than sixty exhibitors that change weekly – design, handmade goods and unusual crafts. It opens early, on 13 November (opening concert at 6pm), and on weekdays not before 4pm.
Harbour Christmas Market by the Chocolate Museum
On the Rhine, between the Chocolate Museum, a historic swing bridge and the Malakoff tower, sits the "Christmas market on the water". It runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, daily 11am–9pm and until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission is free. Shorter hours apply on two quiet public days: Remembrance Sunday (15 November) from 1pm and Totensonntag (22 November) from 6pm.

What to eat and drink
- Reibekuchen: crispy potato pancakes with apple sauce – a Cologne market classic, explicitly on the menu at Heinzels Wintermärchen.
- Flammlachs and Handbrot: flame-grilled salmon and filled bread loaves, found in the Old Town's food lanes.
- Strudel, waffles and apple pancakes for something sweet.
- Glühwein (mulled wine): served in mugs with a deposit (Pfand). Return the mug to get your deposit back, or keep it as a souvenir.
Organisers haven't published 2026 prices yet, so we're not quoting estimates.
Practical tips for international visitors
Cash or card?
More and more stalls accept cards and contactless payment, but not all of them – especially small food stalls. Carry some cash in small notes and coins; it also makes paying and getting the mug deposit back much quicker.
How the mug deposit (Pfand) works
When you buy a hot drink you pay a deposit on top of the price. Bring the mug back to any stall of the same market that uses the same mugs and you'll get the deposit back. Mugs from one market are not always accepted at another.
When to go
- Monday–Thursday before 4pm: relaxed, easy to browse.
- Friday evening and Saturday: great atmosphere, but very crowded in the Old Town.
- Between Christmas and New Year: only Heumarkt (with the rink) and the harbour market are open.
Getting there and around
Take the train. Köln Hbf is directly beside Roncalliplatz and served by ICE high-speed trains from Frankfurt, Brussels, Amsterdam and many other cities. Within the city, trams take you to Neumarkt; for the Stadtgarten use the stops at Hans-Böckler-Platz or Friesenplatz. City-centre car parks fill up early at weekends in Advent.
With kids
The ice rink, Ferris wheel and carousel at Heinzels Wintermärchen and the stilt-walkers at the Angels' Market are the family favourites. With a pushchair, go on a weekday morning or early afternoon.
Where to stay
Hotels around the cathedral and Old Town book up early for Advent weekends. Deutz, across the river with views of the cathedral, and areas along the tram lines are good alternatives, and weekdays are usually much cheaper.

Nearby: our tips around the markets
- Cologne Cathedral: open in Advent too – step inside the Gothic nave before you hit the stalls.
- Great St. Martin Church: the Romanesque church a few steps from Alter Markt.
- Hohenzollern Bridge: walk across to Deutz in the evening and look back at the illuminated cathedral.
- Chocolate Museum: perfect on a rainy day, right next to the harbour market.
- Romano-Germanic Museum: Roman Cologne for a short museum stop.
Our audio guide “Cologne: The City That's Never Finished” walks you from the station past the cathedral to the Rhine – 15 stops over 2.8 km, linking the cathedral market with the Old Town ones, in English or German, with the first two stops free.
