The Chocolate Museum in Cologne (Schokoladenmuseum Köln) is the city's most visited museum and one of the most popular museums in Germany. Set in a ship-shaped glass building at the tip of the Rheinauhafen harbor peninsula, it follows cocoa from the rainforest to the finished bar, with a tropical greenhouse, a working mini factory and a famous chocolate fountain. It is one of the most fun things to do in Cologne, especially with kids or on a rainy day.
The museum was the vision of Hans Imhoff, a Cologne chocolate manufacturer who took control of the historic Stollwerck company in the early 1970s. When Stollwerck moved its factory out of central Cologne in 1975, Imhoff kept its historic collection, and an anniversary exhibition in 1989 proved there was huge public interest. The museum opened on October 31, 1993.
Its modern glass-and-steel wing is joined to a former harbor customs office from 1898, next to the medieval-looking Malakoff Tower and an 1888 swing bridge. Still run by the Imhoff family without public subsidies, the museum draws around 700,000 visitors a year.
The exhibition covers roughly 4,000 square meters (43,000 sq ft) over several floors:
Finish in the shop, or take a seat in the Chocolat Grand Café for cake, waffles, hot chocolate or chocolate fondue with Rhine views.
As of October 2026, the museum is open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last entry at 5 p.m. It closes on the Mondays of November 2, 9 and 16, 2026, and on December 24 and 25; additional winter Monday closures and Carnival schedule changes apply.
Prices are higher on weekends and public holidays:
Buy tickets in advance in the online shop to skip the line; timed-entry tickets are available, and guided tours, workshops and tastings can be added. Weekends, school holidays and rainy days are the busiest times. Tours are booked through the museum's shop; the tour descriptions are in German, so check the English version of the website for options in other languages. There are no lockers; the coat check costs €1.50.
The museum is in the Altstadt-Süd district on the Rhine, south of the Old Town. From the Heumarkt tram stop (lines 1, 7 and 9), it is about a 10-minute walk along the river; bus 133 stops right outside at "Schokoladenmuseum." From Cologne Central Station, the walk past the cathedral and along the Rhine promenade is a pleasant way to arrive.
Cologne is easy to reach by Deutsche Bahn: about an hour from Frankfurt by ICE and around 15 minutes from Cologne Bonn Airport by S-Bahn, so a day trip from Frankfurt or Düsseldorf works well. Drivers can use the Apcoa "Rheinauhafen" underground garage beneath the harbor promenade.
All exhibition areas, the café and the shop are step-free, with ramps and three elevators. Dogs are not allowed inside because food is produced on site, though they are welcome on the café terrace.
If you like chocolate, yes. Plan one to two hours for the exhibition, more with café time. Combine your visit with a walk through the modern Rheinauhafen with its striking crane houses, then stroll north along the river to Great St. Martin Church, the Alter Markt and Cologne Cathedral.
