About this place

Kolumba is the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne, built by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor on top of the ruins of a late Gothic church in the heart of Cologne's old town. If you are visiting Cologne and want something quieter than the cathedral, this is one of the city's most striking museums, where Roman excavations, medieval sculpture and contemporary art share the same quiet, light-filled rooms. It is a short walk from the main train station.

History in layers

The museum was founded in 1853 as a diocesan museum. Zumthor's atelier won the design competition in 1997, and the new building opened on September 15, 2007. It stands on the footprint and surviving walls of St. Kolumba, a church destroyed in World War II. Excavations in 1974 to 1976 uncovered the remains of a Roman residential quarter that was in use from the 1st century to the end of the 4th century. You walk across this archaeological site as part of your visit.

The small chapel "Madonna in den Trümmern" (Madonna in the Ruins), designed by Gottfried Böhm, is built into the complex and remains a prayer space for the city.

What to expect inside

Kolumba does not have a permanent display. Instead, the collection, which stretches from antiquity to the present, is staged in a new yearly exhibition, often combining medieval works with modern and contemporary pieces. The current exhibition is titled "Have you ever fallen in love with a clock?" Take your time: the perforated brick facade, the light and the way old and new meet are part of the experience. Photography is allowed for private use, without flash or tripod. Your ticket includes the museum's paperback guide with all object labels.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026, Kolumba is open Wednesday to Monday from noon to 5 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays. It also closes on December 24, 25 and 31, on January 1, and from Weiberfastnacht (Carnival Thursday) through Ash Wednesday. Each year the museum shuts for several weeks to change the exhibition, most recently from August 15 to September 18.

Admission is 8 euros, or 5 euros reduced, and free for visitors up to age 18. An annual pass costs 30 euros.

How to get there

Kolumba is at Kolumbastraße 4, about an 8-minute walk from Cologne Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). The nearest tram and light-rail stop is Appellhofplatz. The Deutschlandticket covers local public transport. Parking garages nearby include Brückenstraße and Opern Passagen.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you appreciate architecture or contemporary art, or want a calm break from the busy cathedral area. Plan on one to two hours. Guided tours take place by registration outside regular opening hours; if you need one in English, ask the museum in advance.

Nearby

The chapel next door is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Cologne Cathedral is a short walk away.
