From Monday 23 November 2026, Kassel's city centre turns into a fairy-tale world again: the Märchenweihnachtsmarkt (Fairy Tale Christmas Market) stretches between Königsplatz and Friedrichsplatz and is themed in 2026 on "The Brave Little Tailor" under the motto "Seven at One Blow!" Fitting for the city of the Brothers Grimm, the featured tale changes every year. There is a 22-metre fairy-tale pyramid, a fairy-tale forest, a Ferris wheel and a slide in the middle of Treppenstraße, and the market runs until 30 December, longer than most. Here are the official dates and opening hours for 2026, all five locations and tips on combining the market with the Grimmwelt and the mountain park.
| Dates 2026 | 23 November to 30 December 2026. The market is closed on 24, 25 and 26 December. |

The market has one organiser, Kassel Marketing GmbH, and five locations. All share the same dates and hours. The details come from the organiser's website, which we checked in October 2026.
| Location | Where | What to expect | Dates 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Königsplatz | Königsplatz | fairy-tale pyramid, crafts, Königs-Alm | 23 Nov–30 Dec, daily 11am–8pm |
| Friedrichsplatz | Friedrichsplatz | Ferris wheel, fairy-tale forest, sweet and savoury stalls | 23 Nov–30 Dec, daily 11am–8pm |

| Florentiner Platz | above the fairy-tale slide | Scandinavian treats, waffles, spit-roasted ox | 23 Nov–30 Dec, daily 11am–8pm |
| Grimms Märchendorf | obelisk on Treppenstraße | punch, crafts, fairy-tale readings | 23 Nov–30 Dec, daily 11am–8pm |
Königsplatz and Friedrichsplatz are only about 270 metres apart as the crow flies, and Treppenstraße with the slide and the fairy-tale village links the city centre in between. The distances between locations are short. A landmark on Friedrichsplatz is the Sternen-Tower, which the organiser suggests using for orientation. From Königsplatz it is just under a kilometre to the Grimmwelt.

On Königsplatz rises the fairy-tale pyramid, which the organiser calls the largest in Germany: 22 metres high, with six storeys. Around it, numerous stalls sell crafts and all sorts of practical and curious things, plus the Königs-Alm and other cosy huts for food and drink. If you are shopping for gifts, this is the place.
From the Ferris wheel on Friedrichsplatz you get, according to the organiser, the best view of the market and the FlicFlac tent. Right next to it is the fairy-tale forest with fir greenery, forest floor and a campfire, a rustic corner for an evening mulled wine. There are plenty of sweet and savoury stalls here too.
On Opernplatz you find regional specialities, which the organiser calls "Schmeggewöhlerchen" in the Kassel dialect, and the fairy-tale stage with its programme. Every Friday Castellos Puppentheater performs the tale of the brave little tailor there. Florentiner Platz lies above the fairy-tale slide, with Scandinavian food, fresh waffles, mulled wine and spit-roasted ox.
Around the obelisk on Treppenstraße stands Grimms Märchendorf, with lovingly decorated huts, punch, sweet treats and crafts. In a lit hut you can listen to the tale of the brave little tailor at the push of a button. In the fairy-tale wagon there are readings and a children's programme. The fairy-tale slide on Treppenstraße is over 70 metres long.
From 23 November to 23 December the high-wire artists Falko Traber and his son Fernando perform their flying Santa show daily. At 5pm he flies from the GALERIA department store over Opernplatz and Friedrichsplatz, at 6pm Santa abseils from the City Point onto Königsplatz. Afterwards he hands out small presents in the City Point.
Prices for mulled wine and food haven't been published for 2026. We don't give estimates.
Kassel is one of the more rewarding markets for children: the slide, Ferris wheel and fairy-tale forest explain themselves, the fairy-tale village has readings and a children's programme in the fairy-tale wagon, and on Fridays Castellos Puppentheater performs on Opernplatz. At 5pm (Friedrichsplatz) and 6pm (Königsplatz) the Flying Santa also soars over the city centre.

Many long-distance trains stop at Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, about three and a half kilometres from the city centre; from there a tram takes you into the centre. Kassel Hauptbahnhof is only about 650 metres from Königsplatz as the crow flies. Note that during market hours (23 November to 30 December, roughly 10:45am to 10:20pm) Königsstraße is closed to trams: all trams are diverted via Scheidemannplatz and Lutherplatz, and the first connection at Königsplatz resumes from 10:30pm. The KVG MultiTicket is valid for 24 hours and any number of trips; in the city of Kassel it costs 11.40 euros (Single 8.30 euros) and covers up to five people, at most two of them aged 18 or over. If you drive, there are car parks at City Point, Friedrichsplatz, Galeria, Kurfürsten Galerie, Martinskirche and Wilhelmsstraße.
The tourist information at Wilhelmsstraße 23 advises on accommodation and tours and sells the food vouchers (Mon–Fri 10am–5pm, Sat 10am–3pm).
