About this place

The Kleinmarkthalle in Frankfurt is the city's best-known indoor food market, a lively hall in the old town where regional produce, sausages, cheese, spices and international delicacies are sold side by side. If you want a taste of Frankfurt, from green sauce to Italian antipasti, it is a good place for a snack, lunch or a browse. The hall sits on Hasengasse, a short walk from the main shopping street Zeil.

History

The first municipal market hall was built from 1877 to 1879 as a glass-and-iron basilica in neo-Renaissance style. It was destroyed in bombing raids in October 1943 and March 1944. The old hall was huge, about 117 meters long and 22 meters high, with hundreds of stalls on two levels, and it also served the wholesale trade until the central wholesale market opened in 1928. The current hall was built in 1954, about 200 meters (650 feet) southwest of the original site, and it has been a listed building since 2000.

What to see and eat

The hall is about 100 meters long and 24 meters wide, with around 63 traders at roughly 156 stalls. You will find fresh fruit and vegetables, butchers, cheese, bread and pastries, plus spices, sauces, pasta, wine and coffee from around the world. The south side is the butchers' row. Many stands serve food on the spot, from sandwiches and salads to hot dishes and tapas, and the regional specialty is Frankfurt green sauce (Grüne Soße), a cold herb sauce often served with potatoes and eggs.

Allow one to two hours. On Saturdays, when the Schlemmermarkt takes place in front of the hall, it gets especially busy.

Opening hours

As of October 2026, the hall is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Entry is free. Renovation and modernization work around the hall starts from 2026, but according to the operator you can keep shopping during construction.

How to get there

The market is at Hasengasse 5-7 in central Frankfurt. From Frankfurt Central Station it is reachable by S-Bahn or on foot via the city center, and the Hauptwache and Konstablerwache stations are within walking distance. The Deutschlandticket is valid on local public transport. The hall does not publish parking details, so public transport is the easier option.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially at lunchtime on a weekday, if you want a local atmosphere instead of a tourist restaurant. Bring an appetite. The prices and availability of products are set by the individual traders, so ask at the stands.

Nearby

The Zeil shopping street, the Römerberg and the MMK contemporary art museum's ZOLLAMT venue are all a short walk away.
