About this place

The Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK) in Frankfurt is one of Germany's most important museums of contemporary art. Its main building in the old town, Hans Hollein's wedge-shaped "slice of cake", is a landmark in itself. One thing to know before you go: the main building on Domstraße is currently closed for fire-safety renovation, so right now you see the MMK's art at its two other venues, ZOLLAMT and TOWER.

What is open now

The MMK has three locations. ZOLLAMT (Domstraße 3) stands diagonally opposite the main building; the former main customs office, built in 1927 by Werner Hebebrand, has been part of the museum since 2007. TOWER, inside the Taunusturm skyscraper at Taunustor 1, opened in 2014 and offers about 2,000 square meters of exhibition space. The museum's website currently lists exhibitions by Fritz Scholder (April 25 to October 25, 2026) and Amel Bashier (September 12, 2026 to January 10, 2027).

About the museum

ZOLLAMT is a reminder of the "Neues Frankfurt" reform project of the 1920s, comparable to the Bauhaus. Together with the MMK, the Jürgen Ponto Foundation awards the PONTOPREIS MMK to young artists every two years. TOWER was made possible by Tishman Speyer, with founding partners including Stefan Quandt, DekaBank and Helaba.

The museum was founded in 1981 and opened on June 6, 1991. Hans Hollein won the competition in 1983, and his triangular building has three main exhibition floors. The collection comprises more than 5,000 works from 1904 to the present, with strengths in Pop Art, Minimal Art and Joseph Beuys. Its core was 87 works from the Karl Ströher collection, acquired in 1980 and 1981. Susanne Pfeffer has been director since January 2018.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026, ZOLLAMT and TOWER are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. They are closed on Mondays. A combined ticket for both venues costs 11 euros (5 euros reduced); ZOLLAMT alone is 6 euros (3 reduced) and TOWER alone 8 euros (4 reduced). Visitors under 18 get in free, as do holders of the Museumsufer Card. The museum also lists free admission on the last Saturday of each month under its "SaTOURday" program.

How to get there

The main building and ZOLLAMT are in Frankfurt's old town on Domstraße, close to the cathedral. TOWER is in the Taunusturm, not far from the station district. All sites are in the city center, within walking distance of each other, and the Deutschlandticket is valid on local public transport. The museum does not publish parking details on its visitor page.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you like contemporary art. Check the museum's website for the current exhibitions and for the reopening of the main building before you go.
