The main Christmas markets in Baden-Württemberg open in 2026 between 19 November in Freiburg and 25 November in Stuttgart, and all close on 22 or 23 December. Baden-Württemberg combines half-timbering, baroque and wine country into an Advent that is easy to explore by train. Around Stuttgart, Esslingen and Ludwigsburg are just a suburban-train ride away, while Heidelberg and Freiburg are classic weekend destinations. For five cities we have checked the 2026 dates and opening hours with the organisers and written a separate article for each. Here you compare them, get three routes and learn what is typical in the southwest. Freiburg opens first on 19 November; the other four start between 23 and 25 November.
| City | Dates 2026 | Highlight | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stuttgart | 25 Nov–23 Dec | about 250 stalls, decorated stall roofs, children’s fairy-tale land | Stuttgart Christmas market |
| Heidelberg | 23 Nov–22 Dec (ice rink until 10 Jan 2027) | six squares along the Hauptstraße, views of the castle | Heidelberg Christmas market |
| Freiburg im Breisgau | 19 Nov–23 Dec | nine squares in the old town, Lange Rote and chestnuts | Freiburg Christmas market |
| Esslingen am Neckar | 24 Nov–22 Dec | medieval and Christmas market, about 180 stalls | Esslingen Christmas market |
| Ludwigsburg | 24 Nov–22 Dec | baroque Christmas market with light angels | Ludwigsburg Christmas market |
The table shows each city’s main market. Extras such as the Heidelberg ice rink or the Advent market in Esslingen’s Ritterstraße are in the respective article.
Worth noting: all five markets end on 22 or 23 December, and there is no Christmas market in these cities between the years. The exception is the Heidelberg ice rink, which stays open until 10 January 2027.

From 25 November to 23 December the market fills Schlossplatz, Schillerplatz, Karlsplatz and Marktplatz (Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri and Sat 11am–10pm). According to the organiser there are about 250 stalls, and the traders decorate their roofs lavishly with figures and lights. The market is first documented in 1692. Families find the children’s fairy-tale land with a mini railway and mini Ferris wheel on Schlossplatz. Map, programme and tips.
About 140 stalls stand from 23 November to 22 December between Bismarckplatz and Karlsplatz, linked by the Hauptstraße (Sun–Fri 11am–9pm, Sat 11am–10pm). On the Marktplatz you find Santa’s house, on the Kornmarkt the Winterwäldchen with a view up to the castle. At Karlsplatz you can skate until 10 January 2027; the rink costs extra. All six squares at a glance.
From 19 November to 23 December the market spreads over nine squares of the old town, from Rathausplatz to Colombipark (Mon–Sat 10am–8.30pm, Sun 11.30am–7.30pm). The organiser focuses on craft from Germany and Europe, and on Advent Sundays 15 more stalls appear on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße. The Freiburg Minster towers above it all. On Totensonntag, 22 November, the market stays closed. Special hours and map.
From 24 November to 22 December jesters, fire artists and craftspeople in historic costume mingle with classic Christmas stalls in the old town. The organiser mentions about 180 stalls, over 80 of them in the traditional Christmas market, and around 500 programme items. It is open daily from 11am to 8.30pm, Fridays and Saturdays until 9.30pm. From Stuttgart main station it is about 15 minutes. Programme, map and getting there.
On the market square between the two baroque churches and on Arsenalplatz about 150 exhibitors stand from 24 November to 22 December, with big light angels spreading their wings overhead. The market square is open daily 11am–9pm, Arsenalplatz longer (Fri and Sat until 11pm). The S4 or S5 brings you from Stuttgart main station in 12 minutes, and the Residential Palace is close by. Hours, map and tips.

Freiburg opens on Thursday 19 November at 2pm, when the Christmas lights are switched on. In Esslingen sales start at 4pm on 24 November, with the official opening at 5pm. Stuttgart opens on 25 November at 6pm with a ceremony in the courtyard of the Old Castle, and the stalls open from 5pm that day. Mind the Sundays: Freiburg closes at 7.30pm then and the shops are shut. If you want something open deep into the season, choose Heidelberg: the market ends on 22 December, but the ice rink runs until 10 January 2027. For a lap of all squares allow two to three hours in Heidelberg and Freiburg; in Stuttgart one hour is enough, or two to three with mulled wine breaks.
Travel times are approximate unless stated otherwise. Check current departures with Deutsche Bahn.
Stuttgart only starts on 25 November, so plan from that Wednesday. Begin during the day in Esslingen (about 15 minutes from Stuttgart main station) with the medieval and Christmas market, go to Ludwigsburg the next day (12 minutes) and end the evening on Arsenalplatz, which stays open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Save the Stuttgart market for the afternoon or evening, when the stall roofs are lit.
You reach Heidelberg from Stuttgart by train in roughly an hour. Give one day to the six squares from Bismarckplatz to Karlsplatz and finish on the ice rink with a view of the castle. On Saturdays Heidelberg stays open until 10pm. On the second day Stuttgart with Schlossplatz, Schillerplatz and Marktplatz completes the trip, best from opening day (25 November, stalls from 5pm).
With three days you can link the southwest lengthwise. Start in Heidelberg, stay overnight in Stuttgart and then travel to Freiburg. According to our Freiburg article it takes a good two hours from Stuttgart. Freiburg is open Monday to Saturday until 8.30pm, on Sundays only until 7.30pm, when the shops are closed. With time to spare, take the Schauinsland cable car up the local mountain.
On Totensonntag, 22 November 2026, the southwest is relaxed: only Freiburg opens before it and stays closed that day. Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Esslingen and Ludwigsburg start after it. We have not checked a state-wide rule, so check the article for your city if in doubt. Important for drivers: Stuttgart has a driving ban for diesel vehicles of emission standard Euro 4 and worse, and Freiburg has a low-emission zone. Mulled wine prices for 2026 are not yet available.
Freiburg on 19 November at 2pm. Heidelberg follows on 23 November, Esslingen and Ludwigsburg on 24 November and Stuttgart on 25 November.
