About this place

Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster) is the landmark of Freiburg im Breisgau and one of the finest Gothic churches in Germany. Built of red sandstone on the edge of the Black Forest, it is crowned by an openwork spire that the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt called perhaps the most beautiful tower on earth. With its stained glass, tower climb and lively market square, it is the top thing to do in Freiburg and a highlight of any trip to southwest Germany.

Where it is and how to get there

Freiburg lies in Baden-Württemberg near the borders with France and Switzerland. The nearest airport is EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg; ICE high-speed trains connect Freiburg with Frankfurt, Basel and other major cities. From Freiburg main station, it's about a 15-minute walk through the old town to the minster, or take a tram to Bertoldsbrunnen. The old town is largely car-free, so park in a garage on the edge of the center. Regional trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket.

History in brief

Construction started around 1200 in late Romanesque style and continued in Gothic from about 1230. The 380-foot (116 m) west tower was finished around 1330, while the choir took until 1513 to consecrate. The townspeople themselves funded much of the work: most of the Gothic nave windows were donated by craft guilds around 1330, and you can still spot their emblems, such as a pretzel and a boot. Since 1827 the church has been the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. It survived the air raid of November 27, 1944, largely intact, while the surrounding square was destroyed.

What to see

  • The richly sculpted tower porch, with historic measuring standards carved into the walls outside.
  • Guild and emperor windows, masterpieces of Gothic stained glass.
  • The ambulatory and chapels behind the high altar (small fee).
  • The Hosanna bell, cast in 1258, the oldest of 19 bells.

Climbing the tower

A climb of 209 steps leads to the tower keeper's room, with the gallery at about 230 feet (70 m). On the way you pass the medieval bell frame and the clockwork. The view spans the old town, the Black Forest and, on clear days, the Vosges. The upper gallery closes in winter, and the climb is not accessible.
