Titisee-Neustadt, Baden-Württemberg
Lake Titisee in Germany's Black Forest is one of the country's most famous lakes and a favorite day trip from Freiburg. Carved by an Ice Age glacier and surrounded by dark fir forests at about 845 meters (2,770 feet) above sea level, it offers swimming, boat rides and lakeside walks in summer. The resort village of Titisee on the north shore is a classic stop for travelers exploring southwest Germany.
Titisee was formed by the Feldberg glacier, whose moraines now form its shores. The lake is about 1.9 km (1.2 miles) long and 750 meters wide, with a maximum depth of around 39 meters. It is fed by the Seebach stream from the Feldberg massif, and its outflow eventually becomes the Wutach River, a tributary of the Rhine.
Nobody knows for sure where the name comes from. A popular story links it to the Roman general Titus, said to have camped here, though linguists favor other explanations. Local legends even tell of a sunken town on the lake bed.
The lake is freely accessible year-round. You only pay for the lido, the water park and boat trips, with prices in euros posted by each operator along the Seestraße. The tourist office is in the Kurhaus at Strandbadstraße 4. In winter the ice is opened for walking only in marked areas and only once it is at least 16 cm (6 inches) thick, so never step onto the lake without official clearance.
Titisee is roughly 40 minutes by regional train from Freiburg on the scenic Höllentalbahn (Höllental Railway) through the Höllental gorge, and the line continues to Donaueschingen. From Titisee station, the Dreiseenbahn branch line runs to Lake Schluchsee. The Deutschlandticket is valid on these regional trains. From Titisee station, the lakefront is just a short walk away.
Drivers take the B31 from Freiburg. A large paid parking lot (P1) north of the station has more than 700 spaces, about a 10-minute walk from the lake. Overnight guests receive the KONUS guest card for free bus and train travel across the Black Forest. From Stuttgart or Zurich, plan on roughly two hours by car.
Yes, especially if you pair it with the nearby Feldberg or Lake Schluchsee for a full Black Forest day. The village can feel touristy on summer weekends, so arrive early, when the water is often mirror-still, or walk to the quieter southwestern shore. The flat promenade is easy with strollers, and boat rides are a hit with kids. Fall foliage and frosty winter mornings are beautiful, less crowded times to visit.
