Freiburg Christmas Market 2026: dates, opening hours, tips
Table of contents

On Thursday 19 November 2026 at 2pm, Freiburg's Christmas market opens – not on one big square, but spread across nine spots in the Old Town, from the Town Hall square to the illuminated Colombipark. The organiser, Freiburg's tourism and trade fair company FWTM, promises more than 140 stalls for 2026. In between, the little Bächle water channels keep flowing, the spire of Freiburg Minster rises above the rooftops, and almost every corner smells of roast chestnuts and grilled Lange Rote sausage. Below you'll find all 2026 dates, the special hours, a map of the locations and tips for a relaxed Advent day in the Breisgau.

Map: all Freiburg Christmas market locations

The heart of the market is Rathausplatz, with St Martin's Church and the Old and New Town Halls. From there the rows of stalls branch out: east along Franziskanerstraße to Kartoffelmarkt, north via Turmstraße to Unterlinden and Predigertor, west to Rotteckring and Colombipark. All locations are a few minutes' walk apart. Allow two to three hours for a full round with a couple of breaks.

What makes Freiburg's market special

A market that winds through the Old Town

Freiburg has no single huge market square. Instead, a chain of small squares runs through the lanes, which has a pleasant side effect: when Rathausplatz is packed, Predigertor or Rotteckring are often still calm. Since 2022 the Christmas lights only come on at 2pm, so the market looks its best from early afternoon.

Crafts and charity stalls

The organiser focuses mainly on handicrafts from Germany and Europe: woodcarving, nativity figures, ceramics, felt, woollens and old-fashioned toys. On Advent Sundays, seven extra stalls run by social organisations stand in front of the Old and New Town Halls, and UNICEF has had a stall on Franziskanerstraße for decades. If you're shopping for presents, expect handmade pieces rather than mass-produced souvenirs.

Advent Sundays on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße

On all four Advent Sundays (29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December), 15 additional stalls with crafts and food line Kaiser-Joseph-Straße. On Sundays the market is open from 11:30am to 7:30pm while shops are closed – ideal for a stroll without the shopping crowds.

St Nicholas, a kids' bakery and evening meditations

  • St Nicholas: Sunday 6 December at 5pm on Rathausplatz, with a big sack of presents for children.
  • Kids' bakery on Kartoffelmarkt: children bake biscuits under supervision and eat them straight away. Monday to Friday 2–6pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am–6pm, €4 per person, sign up on the spot.
  • Lichtworte at St Martin's: from 1 December, a short Advent meditation with music, words and silence every day at 5:30pm in the church on Rathausplatz.
  • Photo point in Colombipark: the illuminated Colombischlössle makes the best backdrop for holiday photos.

What to eat and drink

  • Lange Rote: Freiburg's signature sausage, famous from the daily Minster market. It's red, long and traditionally grilled without a skin. Order it in a bun with onions and mustard.
  • Mulled wine: every stall has its own recipe, red or white, served in deposit glasses that are washed in mobile dishwashing units.
  • Chestnuts and nuts: freshly roasted chestnuts in a paper bag and candied almonds in every flavour.
  • Dampfnudeln: steamed yeast dumplings with vanilla sauce or plum compote, Baden's answer to cold fingers.
  • Waffles and crêpes: Alsace is only a few kilometres away, and you can taste it at the crêpe stall.

Prices for mulled wine, sausages and the glass deposit in 2026 haven't been published yet.

Your Advent day in Freiburg: our suggestion

  1. 10am – Münsterplatz: the Christmas market is just opening and the farmers' market runs on the cathedral square in the morning. Grab your first Lange Rote and step inside the Minster.
  2. 11:30am – Rathausplatz and Franziskanerstraße: first round of the main market, browsing the crafts while it's still quiet.
  3. 1pm – lunch in the Old Town: the inns around Konviktstraße and Gerberau serve Baden cooking, a good change from street food.
  4. 2:30pm – Kartoffelmarkt and the kids' bakery: if you have children with you, this is the time for biscuit baking. Then on to Unterlinden and Predigertor.
  5. 4:30pm – Schlossberg: if you still have energy, walk up the castle hill at dusk for a view over the lit-up Old Town and the Minster spire.
  6. 5:30pm – Lichtworte and Colombipark: from December, half an hour of calm at St Martin's, then mulled wine in the illuminated park.

Freiburg quirks between the stalls

The Bächle, the narrow water channels along the streets, keep running in Advent. Watch your step after dark, especially with a full mug in your hand. A local saying claims that anyone who accidentally steps into a Bächle will marry someone from Freiburg – so either be careful or don't.

The medieval gates are part of the scenery too. The Martinstor stands right in Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, one block from Rathausplatz, and the Schwabentor at Oberlinden marks the entrance to the Schneckenvorstadt quarter with its pubs and small shops. Both are floodlit in the evening and easy to fit into a walk around the market.

The market itself is younger than its setting suggests: the first Freiburg Christmas market ran from 1 to 20 December 1973 with 20 stalls. A Christkindlesmarkt on Münsterplatz had already existed in the 19th century, as a picture discovered in 1989 shows. Today the market is about seven times the size of its first edition.

Green and step-free where possible

Freiburg calls itself a Green City, and the Christmas market follows suit: it runs on 100 per cent green electricity, all lights have been LED since 2017, and non-essential lighting switches off automatically at 10pm. Crockery and mulled wine glasses work on a deposit system, and plastic bags are banned. For wheelchair users there are flat cable ramps and height-adjustable standing tables, plus a signposted accessible changing-places toilet with a bench and ceiling hoist.

Practical tips

When to go

  • Weekday mornings: the market opens at 10am and stays relaxed until lunchtime.
  • After work and on Saturdays: half of Freiburg plus plenty of visitors from Switzerland and Alsace meet on Rathausplatz.
  • Advent Sundays: more stalls on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, but shorter hours (11:30am–7:30pm).
  • 22 November: the market is closed for Totensonntag, so plan your first weekend accordingly.

Getting there and parking

Freiburg is on the high-speed line Frankfurt–Karlsruhe–Basel; from Stuttgart it takes just over two hours, from Frankfurt about two and a quarter. From the main station it's roughly a ten-minute walk to Rathausplatz, or take the tram to Bertoldsbrunnen. Drivers can follow the parking guidance system, but the park-and-ride sites on the edge of town are the better choice. Note the low-emission zone: high-polluting vehicles are banned from the city centre.

With children

The kids' bakery on Kartoffelmarkt is the classic, and St Nicholas visits on 6 December. The lanes get tight in the evening; with a pushchair, mornings and early afternoons are much easier.

Where to stay

Hotels cluster around the main station and in the Old Town and fill up early on Advent weekends. For cheaper options, look at towns along the Rhine Valley railway or in the Dreisam valley – regional trains get you into the centre quickly.

Gift idea: the Minster, the Bächle and Schlossberg as a keepsake of Advent in the Breisgau – design a personalised poster of Freiburg.

Side trips: Black Forest and Basel

Freiburg is the gateway to the southern Black Forest. The Schauinsland cable car takes you up the city's local mountain, and on clear days you can see as far as the Alps; check winter operating times before you go. Further east are the Feldberg and Lake Titisee, reachable on the Höllental railway. And if you fancy a second Christmas market, Basel is only about 45 minutes away by train – we haven't checked its dates.

Nearby: our tips

  • Freiburg Minster: the Gothic cathedral whose spire you can see from every market location.
  • Freiburg Old Town: Bächle, city gates and lanes around the market.
  • Schauinsland: Freiburg's local mountain with cable car and viewing tower, about ten kilometres south-east.
  • Feldberg: the highest peak in the Black Forest and a ski area in winter.
  • Titisee: the best-known lake in the High Black Forest, easy to reach by train.
