From Tuesday 24 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, the Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market fills Marktplatz between the town's two baroque churches and spills over onto Arsenalplatz. Around 150 exhibitors take part, and large illuminated angels spread their wings above the stalls. Ludwigsburg is 12 minutes from Stuttgart by S-Bahn, an easy side trip if you are already in the region.

Map: Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market
- Barock-Weihnachtsmarkt – Marktplatz — 24.11.–22.12.2026
- Barock-Weihnachtsmarkt – Arsenalplatz — 24.11.–22.12.2026
The two areas are only a few minutes apart. Marktplatz is the historic part, with the stage and most of the stalls. Arsenalplatz lies to the south-west, on the way from the station to the centre, and stays open later. Coming by S-Bahn, you pass Arsenalplatz first.

What makes the Ludwigsburg market special
Baroque backdrop and light angels
Duke Eberhard Ludwig laid out Ludwigsburg as a planned baroque town around his palace in the early 18th century. Marktplatz, with its arcaded houses and two churches facing each other, is part of that plan. In Advent, glowing angels are strung above the square, the image that makes this market instantly recognisable in photos.
Arsenalplatz
Since the market expanded onto Arsenalplatz it has a second area with more stalls. Children can ride a carousel and the Blübähnle, a little train. Because Arsenalplatz stays open until 10pm, and 11pm at weekends, the evening crowd moves here after 9pm.
The prettiest huts: the "Ludwigsburg Angel"
Every year a jury scores the huts on criteria such as a fitting Christmas-baroque theme, how the goods are displayed and how well the decoration hangs together. Visit Ludwigsburg then puts the top five to an online vote. In 2025 first place went to the Barocke Waffelbäckerei, a waffle stand. So look up at the gables and roofs, not just at the counters.
Stage programme
The market stage in front of the Protestant town church has something on every day. Monday to Friday the children's programme starts at 4pm, with puppet theatre, magic or clowns. At weekends shows are scheduled at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm, with mostly music in the evening. For something quieter, the town's churches and venues host Advent concerts and an "oasis of calm".
What to eat and drink
Visit Ludwigsburg has created its own Christmas market product line with regional partners. Red and white mulled wine comes from the Weingärtner Marbach co-operative, plus an alcohol-free fruit punch made from Ludwigsburg apples and dark local grapes. Bäckerei Lutz bakes chestnut gingerbread with chestnut purée, and TeeGschwendner adds a Christmas tea and baked-apple chocolate. New this year is a jelly made from the mulled wines. You can buy everything at stand no. 101 to the left of the stage, at the tourist office and at the partners' shops. The souvenir mug with the market logo costs 2 euros there. The organiser has not published mulled wine prices at the stalls for 2026.
Useful if you have allergies or dietary needs: the city publishes a PDF listing which stalls offer lactose-free, gluten-free, nut-free, vegan or vegetarian food.
Guided walks and souvenirs
Visit Ludwigsburg runs its own Advent walking tours. "Ludwigsburg zur Weihnachtszeit" takes you through the lit-up streets of the baroque town with stories from its past. For families, storyteller Xenia Busam plays the nursemaid Caterina and tells fairy tales of light and warmth. Dates and tickets are on the city's website; the tours are aimed at German speakers.
For souvenirs, the market's own product line works well: chestnut gingerbread, wine jelly and Christmas tea keep well and survive a long journey home. If you prefer handmade things, look out for the award-winning huts, where much of the work is done by hand.
An Advent day in Ludwigsburg: our suggestion
- Morning – Residential Palace: the Residential Palace can only be visited on a guided tour. From 2 November to 22 December the "Duchess" tour runs Monday to Friday at 11am, noon, 3pm and 4pm, and hourly from 11am to 4pm at weekends.
- Lunch – Marktplatz: a short walk from the palace brings you to the market. Eat here before the afternoon crowds arrive.
- Afternoon – shows or shopping: on weekdays the children's programme starts at 4pm. Without kids, browse the craft stalls towards Holzmarkt.
- Evening – Leuchtende Traumpfade: until 6 December 2026 the Blühendes Barock gardens turn into a light trail after dark. It needs a separate ticket.
- Late evening – Arsenalplatz: when Marktplatz closes at 9pm, Arsenalplatz stays open until 10pm or 11pm.

Practical tips
Best time to go
- Weekdays before 4pm: the most room between the stalls.
- Weekends: the 3pm, 5pm and 7pm stage shows draw crowds, so plan your stroll around them.
- Until 6 December: the only window to combine the market and the light trail in one evening.
- Last day: Tuesday 22 December 2026.
Getting there and parking
The city recommends public transport. From Stuttgart Hbf, take the S4 (towards Marbach/Backnang) or the S5 (towards Bietigheim-Bissingen) to Ludwigsburg in 12 minutes; regional trains on the Würzburg, Karlsruhe and Heilbronn lines also stop there. From the station it is about ten minutes on foot to Marktplatz, or take a bus to the Rathaus stop. Drivers can use the Asperger Straße, Akademiehofgarage, Rathausgarage and Marstall car parks, all around 500 metres from Marktplatz.
Accessibility and toilets
The main paths are step-free with wheelchair ramps over cables. Portable toilets stand next to the Protestant and the Catholic church, and there is an accessible public toilet next to Caféstüble Lutz at Marktplatz 11.
With children
Arsenalplatz has the carousel and the Blübähnle, and the stage has a children's show at 4pm on weekdays. Inside the Residential Palace, the Kinderreich hands-on area opens on Saturdays from 2pm with registration.
Vouchers and groups
Some stalls sell gift vouchers, and the city has a list online, a simple option for an office Christmas party or a small present.
Ludwigsburg and Stuttgart in one day
With the S-Bahn taking just 12 minutes, the two markets combine easily. A good plan: palace and Marktplatz in Ludwigsburg in the morning, the S4 or S5 to Stuttgart and Schlossplatz in the afternoon, then back for a last drink on Arsenalplatz, open until 11pm at weekends.
Where to stay
Ludwigsburg has hotels within walking distance of the palace and the market. If you are visiting several markets in the region, staying in Stuttgart and commuting by S-Bahn works well.
Gift idea: a personalised poster of Ludwigsburg or Stuttgart as a keepsake of your Advent trip.
