From Tuesday 24 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, the old town of Esslingen am Neckar turns into a medieval fair and a Christmas market at the same time. Around 180 stalls and some 500 performances spread across Marktplatz, Rathausplatz, Hafenmarkt and Kleiner Markt. Jugglers, fire artists and blacksmiths in period costume work right next to nativity figures and mulled wine stands. It is a 15-minute S-Bahn ride from Stuttgart.

Distances are short. From Marktplatz below the Stadtkirche St. Dionys it is a two-minute walk to Rathausplatz in front of the Old Town Hall, with Hafenmarkt just behind it. Kleiner Markt, home to the Zwergenland children's area, sits north of Marktplatz, and the Postmichelbrunnen fountain is on the southern edge of the old town. Ritterstraße, with the Advent crafts market, is a few steps away. The city publishes a PDF plan of all market areas on its event page.

Two markets in one old town
The medieval market
For four weeks a cast of medieval traders takes over the old town. Merchants sell from wooden booths and tents while craftspeople demonstrate old techniques in front of visitors: pewter casting, stonemasonry, smithing, broom making and glass blowing, with some offering workshops. After dark, fire artists swing their torches across the squares. The half-timbered houses around Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt provide a backdrop no set designer could improve on.
The traditional Christmas market
If knights and jesters are not your thing, there are more than 80 stalls of a classic Christmas market with a vintage carousel and a candle workshop. Look for tree decorations, nativity figures, clay lantern houses, old-fashioned toys, felt hats, natural clothing, furs and jewellery. The photo stop is the tall Erzgebirge-style Christmas pyramid on Marktplatz in front of the red-and-white half-timbered gable of the Kielmeyer house. Some traders rotate during the season, so a second visit will not show you exactly the same stalls.
Christmas island and living nativity
At the Postmichelbrunnen fountain the organiser sets up a small Christmas island with a living nativity scene. With young children it is often the calmest stop on the loop.
Advent market on Ritterstraße
On Advent weekends an arts and crafts market opens on Ritterstraße. More than 30 makers show work in felt, glass, wood and wool. The line-up changes from weekend to weekend, so gift hunters may want to come back.
Programme: stages, performers and the story tent
The daily cultural programme is what sets Esslingen apart. There are three stages: on Rathausplatz, on Hafenmarkt and in Zwergenland on Kleiner Markt. Expect stilt walkers, jugglers, acrobats, storytellers, minstrels and dancers. Acts announced for 2026 include:
- Argentum, medieval tunes with danceable rhythms, from 26 November;
- Schmierenkomödianten with their comedy show, 28 November to 9 December;
- Zirkus Meer with acrobatics, 1 to 4 December, and Zirkus Krims Krams with acrobatic fairy tales, 11 to 14 December;
- Krless, musicians from Prague, 12 to 17 December;
- Eisenhans, an old-school strongman, 15 to 17 December;
- Saboï with medieval music from southern France, 18 to 20 December.
In the story tent, professional storytellers perform for children and adults, free and without booking. The programme is in German: Naceur Charles Aceval from 27 to 29 November (age 8 and up), Yussuf Ibrahim with tales of the Orient from 30 November to 4 December (age 6 and up), and Pirolina from 5 to 22 December with stories from five centuries.
What to eat and drink
At the medieval market, food is part of the show: meat roasts over open fires and some stands sell Stockbrot, bread dough baked on a stick over the fire. The Christmas market covers the classics such as bratwurst, roasted almonds and Glühwein. Esslingen is a wine town with vineyards right above the old town, so many visitors finish in one of the wine taverns or cellars the city recommends in its visitor tips. The organiser has not published mulled wine prices for 2026.

An Advent day in Esslingen: our suggestion
- 11am – Marktplatz: start as the stalls open, at the pyramid in front of the Kielmeyer house, and look round the traditional Christmas market while it is still quiet.
- Lunch – Hafenmarkt: eat something cooked over an open fire at the medieval market, then watch the craftspeople at work.
- Afternoon – Old Town Hall and castle: the Old Town Hall with its painted Renaissance gable has a carillon. If you want some exercise, climb the Burgstaffeln steps to the castle walls for a view over the old town, the vineyards and the Neckar valley.
- Dusk – stages: the most atmospheric shows start on Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt, with fire acts after dark.
- Evening – wine tavern: round off the day in one of Esslingen's wine taverns before the S1 takes you back to Stuttgart.
Practical tips
Best time to go
- Weekdays between 11am and 3pm: the narrow lanes around Hafenmarkt and Rathausplatz are at their quietest.
- Friday and Saturday: longest opening until 9.30pm, but evenings get very busy, partly because of coach groups from across the region.
- At dusk: the fire shows only work in the dark, so from around 5pm.
- Advent weekends: the only days the crafts market on Ritterstraße is open.
Getting there and parking
The S-Bahn is the easiest option: the S1 and regional trains stop at Esslingen station, about 15 minutes from Stuttgart Hbf. From the station and the bus station it is around ten minutes on foot to Marktplatz. By car, take the A8 (exit Esslingen) or the B10; in town, electronic signs show free spaces in the multi-storey car parks. Coaches drop off on Kiesstraße by the university.
With children
Zwergenland on Kleiner Markt has its own stage for children's shows. Add the story tent, the vintage carousel, the candle workshop and the living nativity at the Postmichelbrunnen. If you get separated, the pyramid on Marktplatz is an easy meeting point.
Tourist information during the market
The tourist office on Marktplatz is open Sunday to Thursday 11am–6pm and Friday and Saturday 11am–7pm while the market runs. Pick up a town map and ask about guided walks there.
Where to stay
Esslingen is small and old-town rooms go quickly on Advent weekends. A hotel in Stuttgart works well too: the S1 connects both without changing trains.
Gift idea: a personalised poster of your favourite town in the south-west makes a good present.
Nearby: our tips
We do not have our own pages for Esslingen yet, but the Stuttgart region is right on the doorstep:
- Schlossplatz Stuttgart: heart of the Stuttgart Christmas market, direct on the S1.
- Mercedes-Benz Museum: on the S1 line between Esslingen and Stuttgart, ideal for a cold morning.
- Wilhelma: zoo and botanical garden with warm glasshouses.
- Stuttgart TV Tower: views over the city and the Neckar valley.
- Ludwigsburg Residential Palace: baroque palace in a town with its own baroque Christmas market.
If you are spending time in Stuttgart too, our audio guide "Stuttgart: Tinkerers in the Cauldron" covers the city centre, where the Stuttgart market stands, in 13 stops. More ideas: Stuttgart.
