About this place

Hambach Castle (Hambacher Schloss) near Neustadt an der Weinstraße is called the cradle of German democracy. In May 1832 about 25,000 people gathered here for the Hambach Festival, calling for freedom, a free press and German unity under black, red and gold flags. The castle stands on a hill at the edge of the Palatinate Forest, with wide views across the Rhine plain, a permanent exhibition and a restaurant. It is one of the most important historic sites in the Palatinate wine region.

Where it is and how to get there

Hambach is part of Neustadt an der Weinstraße in Rhineland-Palatinate, roughly 40 minutes by car from Mannheim or Heidelberg and about 1.5 hours from Frankfurt. From Neustadt main station, bus line 502 runs every 30 minutes to the "Schloss" stop, and from there it is about 400 m (a quarter mile) uphill on foot. By car, take the A 65 to exit 13, Neustadt-Süd, then the B 39 and follow the signs to Hambach. Cars cannot drive up to the castle. Street parking nearby costs 2 euros per hour or 8 euros per day.

Why it is worth a visit

The castle dates back to the 11th century and was destroyed in 1552 and again in 1688. Bavaria acquired the ruin in 1816. During the festival, held 27 to 30 May 1832, speakers called for democracy and national unity, and the event is seen as a turning point in German history. The castle is still nicknamed "Maxburg" after Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria, who received the ruin as a gift in 1842. Its neo-Gothic rebuilding began in 1844 but was left unfinished after the revolutions of 1848/49. It was largely restored in 1980 to 1982. In 2015 the castle received the European Heritage Label.

The castle is open all year. Autumn brings golden vineyards below the walls, and spring brings fruit blossom. On busy weekends and event days the roadside parking fills up quickly, so a weekday visit is easier. Allow two to three hours. The best views come on clear days; late afternoon in autumn is especially pretty. The path to the castle is steep, but disabled parking spaces are located right at the castle. Contact the castle for tours for visitors with disabilities. We found no information on tours in English, so ask when you book.

Nearby

The castle lies on the German Wine Route. Wine villages such as Maikammer are close, and the Palatinate Forest begins just behind the hill, with several hiking trails passing the castle.
