About this place

Villa Ludwigshöhe near Edenkoben is the summer palace King Ludwig I of Bavaria built on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. Set above the vineyards of the German Wine Route, this neoclassical villa in Italian style offers sweeping views over the Rhine plain, Pompeian-style wall paintings inside, and a gallery devoted to the German Impressionist Max Slevogt. It is an elegant stop on any trip through the Palatinate wine country.

Where it is and how to get there

Edenkoben lies in the southern Palatinate, about 30 km (19 miles) southwest of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. From Frankfurt Airport the drive takes roughly an hour and a quarter, and from Heidelberg under an hour. By car, take the A65 exit Edenkoben and follow the signs; public parking is below the villa. By train, ride to Edenkoben station on the line between Neustadt and Landau, then continue by local bus or the VRNflexline on-demand shuttle. Local trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket.

History

The Palatinate belonged to Bavaria in the 19th century, and Ludwig I wanted a villa "in the Italian manner" for the warm season in the mildest part of his kingdom. Construction began in 1846 to plans by Friedrich von Gärtner, with Leo von Klenze taking over after Gärtner's death. By the time it was finished in 1852, Ludwig had already abdicated in 1848 amid the scandal over the dancer Lola Montez. He still spent summers here every other year until 1866. Ludwig I was the grandfather of the famous "fairy-tale king" Ludwig II.
