About this place

The Lichtenhain Waterfall in the Kirnitzsch Valley near Sebnitz is one of the oldest visitor attractions in Saxon Switzerland, the sandstone region southeast of Dresden. It is a small cascade with a twist: a weir holds the stream back and releases it at intervals, sending a rush of water over the rocks. Add a vintage tram that stops right in front, a half-timbered inn and trails into Saxon Switzerland National Park, and you have a charming stop on any day trip to the area.

Where it is and how to get there

The waterfall sits at the end of the Kirnitzsch Valley, about 8 km (5 miles) from the spa town of Bad Schandau.

  • From Dresden: Take the S-Bahn suburban train to Bad Schandau; the Deutschlandticket is valid.
  • Kirnitzsch Valley Tram: From the Kurpark stop in Bad Schandau, this historic tram runs every 30 minutes on its summer timetable (March 28 to November 1, 2026) and ends at the waterfall. A single ride is €7 and a day ticket €10; the Deutschlandticket is accepted. Bus 241 is an alternative.
  • By car: Follow the Kirnitzschtalstrasse road up the valley from Bad Schandau. There is a parking lot at the waterfall, but it fills up on sunny weekends.

A waterfall made for tourists

The cascade was first described in 1812. In 1830 locals raised it with a short channel and added a weir, and a "waterfall puller" opened it for paying visitors. The half-timbered inn dates from 1852, and after the tram opened in 1898 the spot drew huge crowds. A flash flood on July 17, 2021 almost destroyed the waterfall. It was rebuilt and officially reopened on April 11, 2025.

What to expect

During the day, the weir opens roughly every 30 minutes, and for a few minutes the water tumbles over the sandstone. Be realistic: this is a modest waterfall, and after dry spells the flow can be weak. The appeal is the combination of tradition, the yellow tram and the forested valley. Entry is free, and the inn serves food.

Hiking from the waterfall

  • Kuhstall rock arch: about 30 minutes uphill, one of the best short hikes in the national park
  • Malerweg (Painters' Way): the famous long-distance trail passes nearby
  • Affensteine and Winterberg: longer routes for experienced hikers

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, as part of a half day that includes the tram ride and the hike to the Kuhstall arch. On its own, the waterfall is a quick stop of 20 to 30 minutes. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and children love waiting for the rush of water.
