About this place

Königstein Fortress in Saxon Switzerland is one of the largest hilltop fortresses in Europe. Perched on a flat-topped sandstone mountain 240 meters (790 ft) above the Elbe River, it combines more than 50 historic buildings, a well cut over 150 meters into the rock, and sweeping views over one of Germany's most dramatic landscapes. It is one of the most rewarding day trips from Dresden, especially if you pair it with a hike in Saxon Switzerland National Park.

Where it is and how to get there

The fortress rises above the small town of Königstein, about 30 km (19 miles) southeast of Dresden near the Czech border. The easiest way to get there is the S1 S-Bahn from Dresden Hauptbahnhof to Königstein, covered by the Deutschlandticket. From April to October, the "Festungsexpress" shuttle runs up from the town (round trip €8); otherwise, follow marked forest trails for a 30–45 minute uphill walk. Elbe steamers from Dresden and Bad Schandau also stop in Königstein. If you drive, use the multistory parking garage on the B172 road, 650 meters from the entrance (day ticket €13).

A fortress that was never conquered

A castle on the Königstein is first recorded in 1233, when the area belonged to the Kingdom of Bohemia. In the 1560s, miners dug a 152.5-meter (500 ft) well through solid rock, today the second deepest castle well in Europe. From 1589, the Electors of Saxony turned the site into their strongest fortress. Over the centuries it served as a garrison, state prison, treasury, and refuge for the Saxon court, and it was never taken in battle. It has been a museum since 1955 and welcomes around half a million visitors a year.

Things to see

  • The ramparts: A walk along the roughly 1.8 km (1.1 mile) wall reveals breathtaking views of the Elbe valley and the table mountains of Saxon Switzerland, including the Lilienstein.
  • Lookout points: Georgenbastion, Königsnase, and Hempels Eck are among the best viewpoints.
  • The well house: Peer into the famous deep well, then visit the information office and shop in the same building.
  • Exhibitions: Learn about prisoners, princes, and soldiers in the historic buildings; the German Armed Forces Military History Museum runs exhibits in the two arsenals.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, the fortress is open daily 9 a.m.–6 p.m. through November 1, and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. from November 2 until mid-March (until 7 p.m. on Advent weekends during the Christmas market). Last admission is one hour before closing. Summer tickets cost €17 for adults, €13 reduced, and €42 for families; winter tickets are €15, €11, and €36. Children up to age 6 enter free. Tickets include all exhibitions and the elevator, and online booking is recommended. Audio guides are available to rent; ask at the fortress whether English is offered.

There is a year-round elevator and a glass panorama lift from April to October. Dogs on a leash are welcome outdoors but not inside buildings. Food is available on site.

Is it worth visiting? Absolutely. Plan at least three hours, and come on a clear day for the views. Hikers can reach the fortress on stage 7 of the Malerweg (Painters' Way), a famous long-distance trail through the sandstone mountains, and the S1 train makes it easy to continue to Bad Schandau or Kurort Rathen, gateways to Saxon Switzerland National Park.
