About this place

The Bastei in Saxon Switzerland is the most famous viewpoint in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and one of the top sights in eastern Germany. High above the Elbe River between the villages of Kurort Rathen and Stadt Wehlen, a 19th-century stone bridge links jagged sandstone pinnacles, and the views stretch far along the valley. It's free, open year-round, and an easy day trip from Dresden.

Why it's famous

The Bastei has drawn visitors for more than 200 years, making it one of Germany's oldest tourist destinations. Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich came here, and the trail they followed is now the popular Malerweg (Painters' Way) hiking route. The current Bastei Bridge was built in 1850 to 1851: it's 76.5 meters (251 feet) long, with seven arches spanning a deep gorge. Today around 1.5 million people visit each year.

What to see

  • Bastei Bridge: the region's signature photo. Nearby viewpoints give the best angles on it.
  • Panorama viewpoint: a new 21-meter platform opened in February 2023, replacing the old one closed because of rock erosion. From here the rock drops about 190 meters (620 feet) to the river.
  • More viewpoints: Kanapee, Tiedgestein, and others offer similar, often quieter views.
  • Neurathen Rock Castle: the remains of a medieval castle right by the bridge; according to the regional tourist board, it can only be viewed from outside for the time being due to restoration work.

Admission and best time to visit

As of October 2026, the Bastei, the bridge, and the viewpoints are free and accessible year-round, with no set opening hours.

It gets extremely crowded on weekends, holidays, and summer afternoons. Come at sunrise or early morning, when mist often fills the Elbe valley, or in fall for colorful forests. Allow one to two hours for the bridge and viewpoints, or half a day with a hike. In winter it's often quiet, but steps can be icy, so wear sturdy shoes.

How to get there

The Bastei is in Saxony, about 30 km (19 miles) southeast of Dresden.

  • By train: Take the S-Bahn from Dresden toward Bad Schandau and get off at Kurort Rathen. Cross the Elbe by ferry, then hike up a steep trail. Local trains are covered by the Deutschlandticket.
  • By bus: Bus 237 serves the Bastei; extra lines run on summer weekends.
  • By car: The large parking lot at the access road is about 3.5 km from the Bastei; a shuttle bus runs April 1 to October 31. A closer lot costs more.

Hiking

The Bastei lies within Saxon Switzerland National Park, so stay on marked trails. Popular routes include the Great Bastei Loop (about 4.7 km) and a loop from Rathen through the narrow Schwedenlöcher gorge (about 6.4 km), which involves many steps. A longer route links Rathen, the Bastei, and Stadt Wehlen (about 10.6 km).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, it's one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Germany, and the fact that it's free makes it even better. Arrive early to enjoy the views before the tour buses. Two wheelchair-accessible routes lead to the main viewpoint area, while the bridge and rock paths involve steps. Combine your visit with Königstein Fortress, the open-air Felsenbühne theater in Rathen, or a longer hike in the national park.
