Mainz Christmas Market 2026: dates, opening hours, tips
Table of contents

From 26 November to 23 December 2026, the Historic Christmas Market lights up again in front of Mainz's thousand-year-old cathedral. Its stalls fill the Markt, the Höfchen and Liebfrauenplatz, framed by the colourful Renaissance facades of the market houses. Add an eleven-metre pyramid featuring local characters such as the Mainzelmännchen and Gutenberg, life-size nativity figures by the cathedral and a music box with 18 turning angels. Here are the 2026 dates, opening hours, a map and tips on cathedral, mulled wine and Gutenberg.

Map: Mainz Christmas City

The Historic Christmas Market wraps around the cathedral on three sides: the Höfchen is the main entrance, the Markt with its Renaissance fountain is the centre, and Liebfrauenplatz by the Haus zum Römischen Kaiser is the quieter part. The smaller WinterZeit markets are ten to fifteen minutes' walk away in the city centre. An afternoon is enough for the cathedral market; add an evening for the rest.

What makes Mainz special

More than 200 years of tradition

Mainz had a "Nikolose Markt" as early as 1788. Since 1975 it has been called the "Historic Christmas Market" and has drawn crowds from across the region ever since. Its setting right beside St Martin's Cathedral with its red sandstone towers is unmistakable.

Pyramid, nativity and music box

At the Höfchen, the richly decorated eleven-metre Christmas pyramid has been turning since 2003. On its tiers you meet local figures: a carnival jester, the Mainzelmännchen cartoon gnome, the Roman general Drusus, a bishop and Johannes Gutenberg. A few steps on, hand-carved life-size nativity figures stand in front of the cathedral's Gotthard Chapel, and at the lower entrance 18 carved angels circle on the roof of a nine-metre music box.

Two historic carousels

Children get two vintage carousels and handmade toys; adults get a wide range of crafts, from nativity figures to glass ornaments and woodwork.

What to eat and drink

  • Rheinhessen mulled wine: Mainz is a wine capital, and many stalls make their Glühwein, red and white, from regional wine.
  • Candied almonds, whose scent hangs over the whole market.
  • Weck, Worscht un Woi: bread roll, sausage and wine, the Mainz staple – served in the wine taverns around the cathedral in Advent too.
  • Mulled wine walk: with the GlühWeinWalk ticket you get hot drinks and snacks at participating stalls plus a mug. In 2025 the ticket was sold from the start of Advent at the mainz STORE and online.

The city hasn't announced 2026 prices yet.

The Christmas City: WinterZeit and Neuwintermarkt

Around the cathedral market, the city marketing company mainzplus runs smaller markets under the "Mainzer WinterZeit" name. In 2025 they stood on Schillerplatz with its carnival fountain, on Bahnhofsplatz, in the Hopfengarten and in the courtyard of the Electoral Palace, plus the Neuwintermarkt on Neubrunnenplatz. Several reopened after Christmas, 27–30 December – handy if you're in Mainz between the holidays. The 2026 dates haven't been published; in 2025 the markets ran 27 November–23 December, with Schillerplatz, Bahnhofsplatz, the palace courtyard and the Neuwintermarkt also open 27–30 December.

Most recently there was also a Christmas village on the Rhine embankment by Fischtorplatz, with wooden barrel huts you have to reserve in advance – ideal for groups.

An Advent day in Mainz: our suggestion

  1. 11am – cathedral: start in Mainz Cathedral before the stalls fill up, then see the nativity at the Gotthard Chapel.
  2. 12.30pm – Markt and Höfchen: first loop, the pyramid with its Mainz figures, lunch at the stalls.
  3. 2pm – Gutenberg Museum: while a new building goes up on Liebfrauenplatz, the Gutenberg Museum shows its treasures as "Gutenberg-Museum MOVED" on Reichklarastraße, about ten minutes' walk from the cathedral: two original Gutenberg Bibles and hourly demonstrations on a reconstructed press. In Advent its print shop traditionally lets you print your own Christmas cards.
  4. 4pm – Old Town: a walk through the lanes around Kirschgarten and Augustinerstraße with their half-timbered houses.
  5. From 5pm – Schillerplatz and the cathedral: a detour to the WinterZeit, then back to the floodlit cathedral for a last mulled wine.

Advent also brings cathedral concerts and matinées and the traditional fairy-tale play at the Staatstheater.

An Advent weekend on the Rhine and Main

Mainz, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt are so close together that one weekend gets you three very different markets:

  • Day 1 – Mainz: the cathedral, the Historic Christmas Market, the Gutenberg Museum and the Old Town wine taverns at night.
  • Day 2 – Wiesbaden: a quarter of an hour by S-Bahn across the Rhine, for the Twinkling Star market in the city centre and a stroll to the Kurhaus. We haven't checked its 2026 dates.
  • Day 3 – Frankfurt: Römerberg and Paulsplatz, just over half an hour from Mainz.

The Deutschlandticket covers S-Bahn trips between all three cities, and Frankfurt Airport is about 25 minutes from Mainz for your flight home.

Practical tips for international visitors

When to go

  • Weekdays before 4pm are the most relaxed.
  • Advent Saturdays are very busy, with many visitors from Frankfurt and Wiesbaden.
  • Friday and Saturday the market is open until 9pm.
  • 23 December: last day, only until 7pm.

Getting there

The city explicitly asks visitors to come by public transport. Almost all Mainzer Mobilität lines stop nearby – best at Höfchen, Rheingoldhalle/Rathaus or Fischtor. From the main station it's about 15 minutes on foot to the cathedral. From Frankfurt Airport, the S-Bahn takes about 25 minutes, and from Frankfurt city centre just over half an hour. Car parks Am Brand, Rathaus, Kaufhof, Karstadt, Kronberger Hof and Rheinufer are right by the market.

Cash, cards and Pfand

Most stalls at the cathedral take cards; for the smaller WinterZeit huts a few euros in cash help. Mugs carry a deposit (Pfand), and the GlühWeinWalk mug is yours to keep.

Accessibility

Mainz describes its market as barrier-free: the nativity has a wheelchair ramp, overview maps at the entrance and in the mainz STORE mark accessible stalls, and some stalls have low tables and counters or Braille boards. There are hardly any cable covers, and those that exist have ramps. Accessible toilets are at the Höfchen and in Heugasse off Liebfrauenplatz.

With kids

Two vintage carousels, the pyramid with the Mainzelmännchen and the angels on the music box keep children happy. In 2025 there was also a family Sunday at all WinterZeit markets.

Where to stay

Hotels cluster around the main station, the Rhine embankment and the Old Town. Mainz is an easy day trip from Frankfurt, and staying in Mainz is often cheaper than in Frankfurt.

Gift idea: the cathedral, the Rhine and the Old Town on a personalised poster.

Nearby: our tips

  • Mainz Cathedral: the thousand-year-old imperial cathedral, right by the market.
  • Gutenberg Museum: a world museum of printing, on Reichklarastraße while its new building is under way.
  • Kurhaus Wiesbaden: Wiesbaden, with its Twinkling Star market, is across the Rhine, 15 minutes by S-Bahn.
  • Eberbach Abbey: a Cistercian monastery in the Rheingau, a lovely half-day trip.
