From Friday 20 November 2026, Trier's Hauptmarkt and Domfreihof turn into a market town of wooden stalls again, set against a backdrop few other German Christmas markets can match: medieval gabled houses on one side, the west front of Trier Cathedral on the other, and the Roman Porta Nigra just a few steps away. The market runs until 22 December 2026 and takes place for the 46th time. Here are the official dates and opening hours, the note on the Sunday of the Dead, a day plan with the Roman sights and tips for getting there.
| Dates 2026 | 20 November to 22 December 2026. The market is closed on the Sunday of the Dead (Totensonntag), 22 November. |

Trier has one large Christmas market, spread over two neighbouring squares. The details come from the City of Trier and the tourist information, which we checked in October 2026.
| Market | Location | Dates 2026 | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trier Christmas Market | Hauptmarkt and Domfreihof | 20 Nov–22 Dec | Mon–Thu 11am–8:30pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm, Sun 11am–8pm; closed 22 Nov |
For the opening, the city announces a ceremony with music, theatre and the crowning of the new German Mulled Wine Queen on the Domfreihof, starting at 5pm. We will add the exact opening day once the organiser confirms it.
The Hauptmarkt and the Domfreihof are only about 100 metres apart, so you walk from one square to the other in under two minutes. From the Hauptmarkt it is a few minutes on foot along SimeonstraĂźe to the Porta Nigra. From the main station the walk through the old town is just under a kilometre. If you plan to visit the Imperial Baths, count on about 700 metres as the crow flies from the Domfreihof.

The Hauptmarkt is the central square of the old town. In the middle stand the market cross, which dates back to 958 (the one on the square is a copy), and the Petrus Fountain of 1594/95. Around them the facades show Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles, along with the late Gothic Steipe building with its battlements and arcade. Between these houses stand the decorated wooden stalls. According to the tourist information there are around 90, with crafts, candles, toys, spices and everything else you might give as a present.
On the Domfreihof the stage stands in front of the cathedral's west front. According to the tourist information there is a changing programme for the whole family almost every day, from historic puppet theatre to concerts by the regional music scene. The organiser publishes the full 2026 programme on the Trier Christmas Market website; we don't repeat individual dates here because stage schedules still change. You will also meet the German Mulled Wine Queen, Saint Nicholas and the angels of the Christmas bakery at the market.
Mulled wine prices for 2026 haven't been published yet. We don't give estimates.
The Domfreihof is the place for children: according to the tourist information the stage programme ranges from historic puppet theatre to concerts, and Saint Nicholas and the angels of the Christmas bakery are around, which younger visitors tend to like. With a pushchair, weekday mornings and early afternoons are the most relaxed; at weekends the Hauptmarkt gets noticeably tighter.

The main station is just under a kilometre from the Hauptmarkt as the crow flies, and you walk through the old town. In previous years free shuttle buses ran every 12 minutes on Advent Saturdays from the Messepark car park into the city centre (2024: first bus at 10:15am, last return at 8:11pm from the Konstantin Basilica). The city hasn't yet announced whether and when they will run in 2026. We will add a note as soon as dates are published.
The tourist information offers the package "Adventszauber in Trier 2026": two nights with breakfast, a guided city walk, a festive menu and a voucher for mulled wine or punch, from 199 euros per person in a double room when arriving Sunday to Wednesday. Arrival is possible between 19 November and 20 December 2026. Prices are higher from Thursday to Saturday.
