The markets one by one

Historic Christmas Market on Rathausmarkt

Run by Roncalli under the motto "art instead of commerce", the market has around 80 stalls, including a popular toy lane with toys from around the world and themed streets with crafts, woodcarvings and decorations. According to hamburg.de, almost three million people visit every year.

  • The flying Santa: daily at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm he glides over the market with sleigh and reindeer, telling the story of Rudolph.
  • Vintage carousel for children.
  • Brass quartet playing Christmas tunes every day except Saturdays.
  • Christmas parade on all four Advent Saturdays at 2pm and 5pm near the market.
  • Its own organic mulled wine from a Palatinate winemaker, made to a recipe developed for the market.

Sustainability matters here: no plastic packaging, food on cardboard, paper or reusable deposit tableware, and the lights go off at 11pm. You can also buy the mulled wine mugs.

Santa Pauli on Spielbudenplatz

Hamburg's naughtiest Christmas market mixes Christmas spirit with Reeperbahn nightlife: mulled wine, live music and – Thursday to Saturday – strip shows on the main stage. Don't miss Santa's Glühwein Pharmacy, where you mix your own mulled wine with pipettes of cinnamon, clove or star anise extract. It opens early, on 9 November 2026. It's aimed at adults.

Gingerbread village on Gänsemarkt

Around the Lessing monument stands a village of "gingerbread" huts – made of wood but looking good enough to eat – with crafts, natural cosmetics and organic goods, plus suckling pig, Flammkuchen, Feuerzangenbowle and spit-roast goose with dumplings and red cabbage. A favourite for after-work drinks.

Christmas market at St. Petri

Small and family-friendly, next to what hamburg.de calls Hamburg's oldest surviving church. Real fir trees add a Nordic feel, and a six-square-metre shop-window theatre with moving figures tells the Christmas story. According to hamburg.de, the market is fully step-free; nearest accessible station: U3 Rathaus.

'White Magic' on Jungfernstieg

White pagoda tents on the Inner Alster lake, the floating Alster Christmas tree and a nostalgic Ferris wheel from 1899. The 2026 dates haven't been published yet; in 2025 it ran from 18 November to 23 December.

What to eat and drink

  • The Rathausmarkt organic Glühwein.
  • Spit-roast goose with dumplings and red cabbage on Gänsemarkt.
  • Mix-your-own mulled wine at Santa Pauli.
  • Roasted almonds, gingerbread and fried pastries everywhere.
  • Fischbrötchen (fish rolls): not Christmassy, but always a good idea at the Landungsbrücken piers.

A walking loop through the centre

  1. Afternoon – Rathausmarkt: arrive at 3.30pm and grab a good spot for the 4pm flying Santa.
  2. Then – St. Petri: three minutes' walk, with the shop-window theatre.
  3. Dusk – Jungfernstieg: the Alster tree and, if the market is open, a ride on the vintage Ferris wheel.
  4. Evening – Gänsemarkt: goose or Feuerzangenbowle in the gingerbread village.
  5. Later – Santa Pauli: take the U3 to St. Pauli if you still have energy.

Practical tips for international visitors

Cash, cards and Pfand

Card payment is widespread, but carry some cash for small stalls. You pay a deposit (Pfand) on mugs and reusable tableware – return them for a refund, or buy the mug as a souvenir.

When to go

  • Weekdays before 4pm: quiet enough to browse.
  • Advent Saturdays: parade at 2pm and 5pm – the centre gets packed.
  • After 23 December: the big city-centre markets are closed – but Lübeck isn't (see below).

On rainy days

Hamburg's Advent is often wet. Covered options within walking distance: Miniatur Wunderland in the Speicherstadt, the plaza of the Elbphilharmonie or the Hamburger Kunsthalle by the main station.

Getting there

Hamburg Hauptbahnhof has ICE connections from all over Germany and Copenhagen. From the airport, the S1 runs to Jungfernstieg in about 25 minutes. Walk ten minutes along Mönckebergstraße to the Rathausmarkt, or take the U3 to Rathaus.

With kids

Flying Santa, carousel and toy lane at Rathausmarkt, the shop-window theatre at St. Petri and the "fairy-tale ships" on the Inner Alster, where kids can listen to stories and bake biscuits, are the family favourites. Santa Pauli is not for children.

Where to stay

There are plenty of hotels around the main station and the Alster; prices rise at Advent weekends, so weekdays are better value. St. Georg and HafenCity are good bases too.

Gift idea: City Hall, Elbphilharmonie and harbour on a personalised Hamburg poster.

Day trip north: Lübeck

Lübeck is about 45 minutes away by regional train. The "Christmas City of the North" celebrates from 23 November to 30 December 2026 according to Lübeck's tourism board – so it's open between Christmas and New Year too. The area around the Town Hall and the Holstentor gate is especially atmospheric.

Nearby: our tips

Our audio guide “Hamburg: Merchants Without a King” starts on the Rathausmarkt, right at the historic Christmas market, and ends at the harbour piers – 12 stops over 3.9 km in English or German, with two free stops.
