About this place

Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg is the world's largest model railway and one of the most popular attractions in Germany. Inside a historic red-brick warehouse in the Speicherstadt district, twin brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun and their team have recreated entire countries, cities and a working airport at 1:87 scale. Thousands of trains, cars and planes move through detailed landscapes, and the whole world cycles from day to night every 15 minutes. It delights kids and adults alike.

Where it is and how to get there

The exhibition is at Kehrwieder 2 in the Speicherstadt, Hamburg's UNESCO-listed warehouse district on the harbor in northern Germany.

  • Subway: Baumwall (U3) is about a six-minute walk; Meßberg (U1) about 11 minutes.
  • Bus: line 6 from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (central station) stops right outside at Speicherstadt – Auf dem Sande.
  • From Berlin: high-speed trains reach Hamburg in under two hours, so a day trip is possible.

Note that bus drivers do not sell tickets; buy them from machines or online. There are 44 parking spaces outside at €2 per hour (max €20 per day), with no guarantee of a spot.

What makes it special

Since opening on August 16, 2001, the layout has grown section by section. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest model railway in the world. The numbers are staggering: about 1,700 m² (18,300 sq ft) of layout, more than 16 km (10 miles) of track, over 1,200 trains, more than 11,000 cars and nearly 300,000 tiny figures. In 2024 it welcomed around 1.59 million visitors.

Highlights include:

  • Knuffingen Airport, where model planes taxi, take off and land.
  • Switzerland, with towering peaks and railways spiraling up the mountains.
  • Italy and Venice, colorful coastal towns and canals.
  • Hamburg, the host city in miniature.
  • Rio de Janeiro, with a bustling Copacabana beach.

Many scenes are interactive, triggered by buttons, and you can watch technicians in the control room. New sections are under construction, including South American rainforest and Andes landscapes.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026:

  • Adults: €22
  • Children up to 15: €13
  • Children under 1 m (3.3 ft): free with parents or grandparents
  • Reduced (students, seniors 65+ and others): €19
  • Wheelchair users: €10

Miniatur Wunderland is open 365 days a year, but hours change daily and can run late into the night on busy days, so check the official calendar. Booking a timed ticket online is recommended. If tickets are sold out, you can still wait in a waiting room with free drinks, but expect long waits on weekends, holidays and during school vacations.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, even if you have no interest in trains. The detail and humor in every scene make it one of the best indoor things to do in Hamburg, especially on a rainy day. Allow at least three hours, and more if you want to watch the full day-night cycle in several sections. Families save money because children under 1 m enter free and kids up to 15 pay a reduced price. If you come without a booking, check the waiting-time forecast on the official website first. Elevators connect the levels, and a wheelchair lift serves the entrance steps. Afterward, explore the Speicherstadt canals and the HafenCity, or head to the nearby Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
