The Jungfernstieg is Hamburg's most famous waterfront promenade, running along the Binnenalster (Inner Alster Lake) in the heart of the city. From its wide steps you look across the water to the Alster Fountain, white excursion boats and the elegant facade of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Part shopping street, part harbor-city living room, it is the starting point for Alster lake cruises and one of the essential things to do in Hamburg.
The Jungfernstieg lies in the city center, a short walk from Hamburg City Hall. Underneath it is one of the busiest transit hubs in Hamburg: Jungfernstieg station, served by U-Bahn lines U1, U2 and U4 and S-Bahn lines S1 and S3. From Hamburg Hauptbahnhof it is just one stop, and the S1 runs here directly from Hamburg Airport in roughly half an hour. Local transport belongs to the HVV network, where the Deutschlandticket is valid. Since 2020 the street has been closed to private cars, so arrive by train or on foot.
The story begins in 1235, when Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg built a dam here to hold back the Alster River, creating the lake basin you see today. The waterfront path was widened and planted with trees in 1665 and has been called Jungfernstieg since 1684. The name means roughly "maidens' path": on Sundays, families would parade their unmarried daughters here. In 1838 it reportedly became the first asphalt-paved street in Germany. A redesign in 2006 widened the sidewalks, and in 2020 private car traffic was banned.
The promenade is public and open at all hours, with no entrance fee. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for a stroll, or half a day with a cruise and some shopping. Evenings are especially pretty, when the lights reflect in the water. During Advent, a giant floating Christmas tree appears on the lake and a Christmas market sets up along the promenade. The wide, level walkway works well with strollers and wheelchairs.
Yes; it is hard to visit Hamburg without passing through. Combine the Jungfernstieg with City Hall, a lake cruise and the nearby Hamburger Kunsthalle, or ride the S-Bahn two stops to the St. Pauli Piers on the Elbe.
Promenade jederzeit frei zugänglich; Alsterfontäne in der Saison (April bis November) täglich 9–24 Uhr.
Eintritt frei; Alsterrundfahrt der Alster-Touristik (ca. 50 Minuten) ab 10 €.
