About this place

St. Michael's Church (Hauptkirche St. Michaelis), known to locals simply as the "Michel," is Hamburg's most famous landmark and the most important Baroque church in northern Germany. Its 132-meter (433-foot) green copper tower rises above the harbor district, and the viewing platform offers one of the best views over the Elbe River, the port and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Entry to the bright white-and-gold interior is free, making it an essential stop on any Hamburg itinerary.

Where it is and how to get there

The Michel stands in Hamburg's Neustadt district, a short walk from the Landungsbrücken piers and the old town. Hamburg is about 1 hour 45 minutes from Berlin by ICE train, and Hamburg Airport is linked to the city by S-Bahn. To reach the church, take the S1 or S3 to Stadthausbrücke (exit Michaelisstrasse), the U3 to St. Pauli, or bus 16 or 17 to the Michaeliskirche stop. Drivers can use the Michel-Garage nearby.

Three times rebuilt

The first church was built between 1647 and 1669. Lightning set it ablaze in 1750, and its successor, with the tower by Ernst Georg Sonnin and Johann Leonhard Prey, was completed in 1786. Fire destroyed the church again in 1906; it was rebuilt by 1912 using fireproof steel and concrete behind a Baroque appearance. After damage from World War II bombing, repairs were finished in 1952.

What to see

  • The tower platform at about 83 meters, reached by 52 steps and then an elevator
  • Germany's largest tower clock face, 8 meters across
  • The sanctuary, seating about 2,500, with five organs
  • The crypt, where composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, son of J.S. Bach, is buried
  • The tower trumpeter, who has played a chorale from the tower for some 300 years, on weekdays at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. and at noon on Sundays

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026, the church is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in October, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November to March and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from May to September. Parts of the building close during services and events. Tickets for the tower are sold on site and online.

  • Church: free
  • Tower: adults €8, children €5
  • Crypt: adults €6, children €4
  • Tower and crypt: adults €10, children €6
  • Family ticket: €20 (tower) or €25 (tower and crypt)

Hamburg Card holders get a discount. Harbor lovers can save with combined tickets: the Michel plus the museum ship Rickmer Rickmers costs €10 for adults, and one-hour harbor cruises including the tower start at €28. Tickets are valid for a year and can be bought online. After the tower closes, the "Nachtmichel" evening opening offers views of the city lights at separate prices.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes. The free interior is stunning, and the tower is one of the best viewpoints in Hamburg. The church and crypt are wheelchair accessible via Portal 10, while the tower requires climbing the first 52 steps. For a peaceful moment, join the daily 20-minute noon prayer with organ music at 12 p.m. On summer Saturdays, from Easter to early September, the noon service becomes a 40-minute organ tour of the church. Allow one to two hours.
