HafenCity in Hamburg is Europe's largest inner-city urban development project, a brand-new waterfront district built on former port land along the Elbe River. Since 2000, old docks and warehouses have given way to striking modern architecture, waterside promenades, parks and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Exploring it is free, and it sits right next to the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt, making it one of the top things to do in Hamburg.
HafenCity lies on the southern edge of downtown Hamburg, a short walk from the city center. The easiest way in is the U4 subway from Hauptbahnhof Süd or Jungfernstieg to Überseequartier, HafenCity Universität or Elbbrücken; for the Elbphilharmonie, take the U3 to Baumwall. Hamburg Airport is connected to the main station by S-Bahn, and the Deutschlandticket covers all local transit. Hamburg is about 1 hour 45 minutes from Berlin by high-speed train.
The district covers 157 hectares and expands Hamburg's city center by about 40 percent. It has 10.5 km of quayside promenades, about 11,000 residents today and room for up to 16,000 people in some 8,000 homes, plus up to 45,000 jobs. Because HafenCity lies outside the main dikes, buildings stand on raised plinths, while promenades and squares are designed to flood during storm surges. It is a living showcase of how a port city reinvents itself. The project was approved in 1997, the first residents moved in in 2004, and HafenCity became an official Hamburg district in 2008.
HafenCity has no opening hours or admission fee. Allow two to three hours for a walk, or half a day with the Elbphilharmonie Plaza and a museum. The Forum für Stadt & Zukunft at Baakenallee 33 explains the project and is open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; free guided walks start there on Saturdays and Sundays (as of October 2026). Most promenades are step-free, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants along the way. Prices for food and tours are in EUR.
On the eastern edge you will see the unfinished Elbtower skyscraper, where construction has been on hold since 2023.
Yes. HafenCity combines Hamburg's maritime heritage with bold contemporary architecture, and it pairs perfectly with the neighboring Speicherstadt. Visit around sunset, when the Elbphilharmonie glows above the harbor. It is also a great choice on a day trip from Berlin if you want to see modern Hamburg.
