About this place

The Wieskirche (Pilgrimage Church of Wies) near Steingaden in Upper Bavaria is often called the most perfect Rococo church in the world, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. From the outside it looks like a modest white church standing in a meadow at the foot of the Alps, but step inside and you are surrounded by light, gold, stucco, and soaring frescoes. About one million visitors come every year, and admission is free.

Where it is and how to get there

The church stands in the hamlet of Wies, part of the municipality of Steingaden, on Bavaria's famous Romantic Road. It is a popular stop on a day trip from Munich to Neuschwanstein and the Füssen area, and the easiest way to reach it is by car. The privately run parking lot about 200 meters from the church costs €2 for two hours. Public transportation is limited, according to the church administration; the Romantic Road coach and regional buses serve the stop, and you can enter "Wieskirche" as a destination in the Deutsche Bahn journey planner.

The story behind the church

In the 1730s, monks at nearby Steingaden Abbey assembled a simple wooden figure of the scourged Christ for a Good Friday procession. Considered artistically poor, it was soon stored away in an attic until a farmer's wife, Maria Lory, took it home to her farm "on the Wies" (meadow). On June 14, 1738, she reported seeing tears on the figure's face. News of the "tear miracle" spread quickly, and pilgrims arrived in such numbers that the abbey commissioned architect Dominikus Zimmermann to build a proper church. Construction ran from 1745 to 1754, with frescoes by his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. Planned at 30,000 guilders, it ended up costing around 180,000. Zimmermann had already designed the Rococo pilgrimage church of Steinhausen, but at Wies he went further, dissolving walls and vaults in light, stucco, and color, especially in the choir. The church was consecrated on September 1, 1754.

Things to see

  • The oval nave: Paired white columns and a ceiling 20 meters (66 ft) high create a sense of weightless space.
  • The ceiling fresco: Christ returning on a rainbow, with the closed gate of eternity and the empty judgment seat.
  • The miraculous image: The figure of the scourged Savior still stands in the high altar.
  • The organ: Set above the entrance beneath the painted gate of eternity; the first instrument was built in 1757, and 475 original pipes survive in today's organ.

Opening hours and practical tips

As of October 2026, the church is open daily 8 a.m.–7 p.m. from April through October and 8 a.m.–5 p.m. from November through March. Sightseeing is not permitted during services (Wednesday to Saturday at 10 a.m., Sunday at 8:30 and 11 a.m.), and the church closes an hour before concerts. Guided tours in English, French, or Italian can be booked through the Tourist Information office in Schongau.

Wheelchair users can be dropped off at the step-free south entrance. Dogs are not allowed inside, except assistance dogs. Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the tour bus crowds.

Is it worth visiting? Yes. Even if you only have 30 minutes, the interior is unforgettable, and it fits easily into a Romantic Road or Neuschwanstein itinerary.
